Christian students have
new gathering place
The ouilding has been in use about a
year, but the sign just appeared last
week for the Christian Student Center
at 18th and R streets.
The house is owned by the Church of
Christ; 56th and Vine streets.
Its purpose is to provide students
with an awareness of where they are
going, campus minister Mark Penner,
said.
Penner, 25, is a 1974 UNL graduate.
He took over the duties of campus
pastor six weeks ago. Penner received
his -M.A; in theology from Harding
Graduate School in Memphis, Tenn.
The center is a place where Christians
can gather, as well as provide an out
reach for nonChristians, he said. Pro
grams offered are soul talks, life groups
and Friday night devotionals.
Soul talks take place three nights a
week. About 25 students get together
and talk about God and man's relation
ship to him, Penner said.
The life groups are a time for infor
mal sharing, he explained. Usually, a
biblical passage is read and students dis
cuss how the passage relates to the
present.
The 7 pjn. Friday devotional usually
includes singing and a bible study, he"
said. r
The two story, white framed house is
not a church, Penner emphasized, it is
a student center.
"Students can become confused. The
center in no way tries to act as a substi
tute for church life," he said.
