Polls available
Students who need primary research materials for
papers soon will be able to study opinion polls and ana
lyses done by Selection Research Inc. (SRI) in Love
v library.
SRI, whose home office is in Lincoln, has offices across
the country working with schools, businesses and indivi
duals to conduct research and polls.
Gary Lorenzen, SRI research psychologist, said that
in the next year about 75 to 100 studies, including
marketing and education research and political polls,
will be transferred to Love. Conducted in previous years,
most were done in Lincoln and Nebraska, he said.
Our goal date is to get the first batch to the library
by the first of October," he said.
Because a study is a client's private property, consent
must be given before the material is released, Lorenzen
said. SRI usually waits two years before requesting re
lease, he said. .
"We're in the process of starting this;' he said. "It's
going to take some time . . right now, we're just begin
ning to get some releases."
In the future, the amount of studies transferred will
depend on the number conducted and how many re
leases are received, Lorenzen said. This probably would
be about 25 to 50 a year, he said. '
"We want to do it because we think itH be helpful to
to people," he said.
Love Library is not paying for the research, said Larry
Kahle, social sciences librarian.
The only noticeable cost is that of photocopying all
the released studies because SRI will keep the originals, he
said.
"This will continue into the future. so long as it's
beneficial and each group is happy with it," Kahle said.
The SRI materials will be in the Special Collections sec
tion of Love Library, he said. Students will not be able to
check them out, but can make photocopies if there are
no restrictions by the client, he said.
The decision to transfer the research from SRI to Love
was agreed on by both groups in August after discussing
the proposal for a few months, Kahle said.
Correction
The Daily Nebraskan incorrectly identified the chair
man of the agronomy department in Wednesday's news
paper. The chairman of the UNL agronomy department is
Robert Cast.
Health aides note
. . ..
increasing sniffles
If you have the. sneezes, the sniffles, or a sore
throat, cheer up. Vou're not alone.
Though no one is making any estimates on the per-
centage of UNL students afflicted by colds, university
health officials admit that it has become a problem.
Sheryl Bellinger, health aide instructor, said she has
received reports that the number of students coming
to each health aide with a cold range anywhere from
five to fifteen.
"Of course, this only indicates the situation of stu
dents living on campus," she said .
Health Center Associate Director Gary Martin said,
"We have noticed a lot of people coming in with
colds." Martin said it would be difficult to say just how
many since the cases aren't classified with medical
records in categories such as colds.
"I would say that at least half of the girls on my
floor have had a cold," said Laurie Dodendorf, a
Selleck health aide. "Put not all of them have come to
me.
Health aides are adequately equipped and knowlcde
able about treating colds, Bellinger said. Though there
is no cure, health aides can supply medicines to relieve
cold symptoms. .
"Our first health class dealt with the treatment of
colds," said Dodendorf. According to Bellinger, the
class covers treatments for colds, how the disease is
transmitted and recognizing symptoms.
Health tips instructing students on how to take care
of their, colds should be coming out soon, Bellinger
said.
