page 6 first down Saturday, September 17, 197 Historical script says Huskers should bounce back v By Dennis Onnen If one believes the adage that history repeats itself, he may not be too discouraged by last week's 19-10 loss to Washington State. One has only to look at the last time the Huskers lost their opening game. That occurred in 1972 when UCLA won 20-17 to snap the Huskers' 32-game unbeaten string and dim their hopes for a third consecutive national championship. However, Nebraska rebounded from that loss to post a 9-2-1 record, capping the season with a 40-6 romp over Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl. That win vaulted the Huskers to fourth in the final national rankings. Despite that promising history, the Huskers today must 'overcome injuries to key personnel, most notably at quarterback. Starter Randy Garcia suffered a strained knee last week when tackled in the end zone for a safety. He is doubtful for the game today, Tom Sorley, promoted to first string after guiding the Huskers on both scoring drives against Washington State, also is questionable. He injured his right shoulder in the second quarter last week, and after re-entering the game, was knocked out again on a jarring tackle that left his back and neck sore. If Sorley and Garcia are unable to play, Coach Tom Osborne has said he wiil go with sophomore Jeff Quinn. Quinn had an Inauspicious season as a backup quarter back for the freshman team in 1976, completing two of three passes and losing 13 yards on seven carries. How- oooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ever, he came on strong in spring practice and is consid ered the best runner among the quarterbacks. Also doubtful for the game today is fullback Dodie Dnnnflll whr iammprt hi nprk nn the onpninn Irirlenff against Washington State and was in for only a few plays before retiring for good. His place will be taken by Keith Steward, who gained 46 yards on 14 carries last week. Despite a bruised thigh, Rick Berns will start again at l-back, He was in the game for about 75 of the Huskers' 80 plays, "about the most we've ever played an l-back," according to offensive backs coach Mike Corgan. Berns, the leading Husker rusher last year with 972 yards, showed he was after that distinction again by gain ing 153 yards on 26 carries, an average of 5.9 yards per Continued on p. 7 o o o o o o o o 0 NEBRASKA UNION REC ROOM GAME DAY BOWLING SPECIAL 35" a line 9-6 PM.
