Haymarket still
only built on idea
Even after 12 years of waiting, the UNL College of
Architecture still is interested in restoring Lincoln's old
Haymarket Square area, according to Jim Griffin.
Griffin, a faculty member of the College of Archi
tecutre, said recent talk to restore the Haymarket area is
not a new idea. UNL has worked W various plans for the
past '12 years, but most of the plans have been lost or
misplaced because of lack of storage, he said.
Griffin said the proposed study would benefit UNL
and the Lincoln by beautifying the area and opening more
stores and apartment space. 'The study also would give
UNL architecture instructors and students the chance
to practice their trades.
Attention is being drawn to the proposed study by
the Marketplace Restoration Association, an organization
formed to promote rejuvenation of the Haymarket area.
The study would concentrate on an area bounded by R
St. on the north, 9th St. on the east L St. on the south
and the railroad tracks and railyard on the west. .
