Cornhusker coaching staff adds five new faces
By Jim Hunt
UNL's offensive and defensive units will
not be the only facets of the Husker foot
ball program that have a new look. Five
coaches have been added to the staff after
last season's 9-3-1 record.
The new additions are defensive coor
dinator Lance Van Zandt, defensive line
coach Charlie McBride, tight end and wing
back coach Gene "Huey and graduate as
sistants Brad Jenkins and Jake Cabell.
They will take the place of Warren
Powers, who returns to Lincoln today as
head coach of Washington State, defensive
coordinator Monte Kiffin'who took the
same position at Arkansas, and Bill Myles,
who became an assistant coach at Ohio
State.
All of the new coaches are familiar with
Big 8 Conference football. Van Zandt
coached for two seasons at Oklahoma State
followed by two seasons as defensive coor
dinator at Kansas. McBride, an assistant at
Wisconsin from 1970 to 1975, played his
collegiate football at Colorado where he
was an All-Big 8 end in 1 961 .
Jenkins and Cabell both lettered in foot
: ball at UNL, Jenkins in 1974-75 as a
tight end and Cabeli 1976 as a defensive
cornerback.
Huey was the receiver coach at New
Mexico for three years before coming to
UNL. He played his collegiate football
at Wyoming, and scored the Cowboy's
only touchdown in their 13-10 loss to the
Huskers in 1968. Paul Rogers won that
game for the Huskers with a 51 -yard field
goal.
Huey said Husker Head Coach Tom Os
borne was the main reason he came to
UNL.
"Anytime you can come to Nebraska
and get a chance to work with an experi
enced staff, it's good," he said. "Basically
Tom Osborne runs a great program-a very
honest program with integrity." -
He also was influenced by the fact his
cousin, Ben Gregory, played football at
UNL in the mid-1960s,
McBride said he came partly because of
the caliber of football played in the Big 8.
Huey made the same point.
"The Big 8 is the toughest conference in
the country," Huey said. "In the Big 8 you
play somebody tough every week."
Both Huey and McBride see Oklahoma
as the top team in the Big 8 this year.,
"I didn't see any of the Big 8 teams play
last year so I have to go by what everyone
says," McBride said. VI have friends that
coach at Oklahoma, and they say they are
going to be tough this year.
"I haven't seen Colorado yet, but I
heard they are going to be good. I think we
and Missouri should be the sleepers this
year." ...
Huey said that with 43 returning letter
men, Oklahoma will give the Huskers some ...

C'mon coach, we've seen better foldouti than this.
thing to shoot at. However, he warns
against looking back at last year instead of
concentrating on this season.
"I think we are a pretty good football
team," he said. "Like Coach Osborne has
said, this is not a rebuilding year. ;
'This year we have no big-name players,
which could work to our advantage. People
try harder when they know they have a
chance of playing. They know they all con
tribute to the team." ...
McBride said his first game as a Husker
coach probably will be the same as any
other one. .
"I 've been in the game for 1 5 years," he
said. "I might be a little nervous for the
first game, but I'll settle down after that."
Huey said Memorial Stadium on a foot
ball Saturday, with the emotion and excite
ment, is like the eighth wonder of the
world.
But even all the excitement in the
stands does not affect the coaches,
McBride said. ,
"I don't think the crowd affects the
coaches during the game," he said. 'The
players might hear them or the coaches
might when they come out of the tunnel,
but during the game the coaches have a lot
on their minds."
