Fair to celebrate Denmark
The heritage and culture of one group
of the Scandinavian people will be celebra- '
ted this year at the Nebraska State Fair.
Of the estimated 2.5 million Danes and
Danish extraction in the country, about 60
per cent of them live in the Midwest. One
hundred thousand Danes can be found in
the Nebraska-Iowa region. During the State
Fair, quite a few of them will be found
right here in Lincoln.
Every Danish and Danish-American or-
ganization in Nebraska as well as six inter
national organizations will be represented
at the State Fair Sept. 2-11.
This is the second year an ethnic group
was invited by the State Fair Commission
in Lincoln, accprding to State Fair manager
Henry Brandt. Last year the Czechs were
honored.
Gary Eilts, director of fraternal affairs
for Danish Brotherhood in American Na-'
tional Headquarters in Omaha, will coor
dinate demonstrations and activities. .
Danish dances
Sunday and Monday the Minden Danish
Dancers in traditional dress will give several .
performances, of traditional Danish dances
in the Open Air Auditorium. The group has
been together about 15 years, Eilts said.
The same group who performed during
President Carter's inauguration, the Dana
Dancers from Dana College in Blair, will
dance Sept. 10 and 11 in the auditorium.
Sept. 10, Dana Choir, a group of singers
from Dana College under the direction of
Dr. Paul Neve, will sing traditional and
contemporary Danish songs.
While everyone sits back to watch the
dancers and singers, Danish handicraft such
as rug making, needlework, fine china and
tapestries, along with Danish food will be
on display in the Exposition Building. .
Danish food
Demonstrations on how to make
"kringle" the original Danish "smorre
brod", Danish open face sandwiches and
"aebleskiver," small round pancakes, will
be given throughout the fair, Eilts said.
Lodges from Omaha, Lincoln, Grand
Island, Minden and Ruskin will be
represented, he said. Seven state organiza
tions also will participate. '
