Stadium expansion
receives approval
A proposed 8,000-seat expansion to the east balcony
of Memorial Stadium received a vote of approval Wed
nesday by the Stadium Expansion committee.
The committee voted to xecommend the estimated
$3.2 million expansion to the NU Board of Regents.
The board is expected to consider the proposal at its Sept.
9 meeting.
If approved by the Regents, the project would be com
pleted by April 1 , 1979. The expansion would be financed
by .a $1 surcharge on all Nebraska football tickets or by
assessing $4 per ticket for the new seats from the athletic
, department.
The committee, appointed by Regents' chairman
Robert Simmons of Scottsbluff, voted 6-2 in favor of the
proposal. y
In favor of the proposal were Dick Herman, Dr. Arden
Means and PJ. Morgan, all of Omaha, Gladys Seaton of
Hastings, Joe diNatale of North Platte and John Frey of
Lincoln.
Jules Burbach of Hartington and Scott Cook of Lin
coln cast the. dissenting votes. Two committee members,
Mary Fejfar of Lincoln and Harold Ledingham of
Mitchell, were absent.
The committee's decision is part of a continuing contra
versy concerning an expansion to Memorial Stadium. In
May, Athletic Director Bob Devaney proposed the 8,000
seat expansion. Devaney told the- regents the athletic
department could finance an 8,000-seat expansion but
said no funds were available for a larger expansion.
