Pollsters to count our furry friends
Students with pets and little or no monev mioht want
to hide their furry friends in the1 closet until Dec. 18.
A federally funded survey of the number of dogs and
pats in Lincoln households is currently being taken. The
survey, being taken by the Lincoln-Lancaster County
Health Department, will require the owners of all un
licensed pets to license them within 15 days. -f
Dennis Grams, animal control specialist with the Lincoln-Lancaster
County Health Department, said $29,000
of Comprehensive Employee : Training Act funds was
allocated for the six month survey. The survey will be
completed Dec. 18.
Grams said the survey was not ordered to increase
license sales but to gain more accurate information for the
animal contfol department.
The survey is being taken by five Health Department
employees. The five are asking Lincoln households to re
port the number of dogs and cats they own and how
many are licensed. The pollsters also will ask if any of the
pets have been neutered.
The pollsters will emphasize the advantages of licensing
pets, Grams said. He said these include a new computer
used in licensing that will allow animals picked up to be
taken home to their owners rather than to the pound as in
the past.
"Now we can find out where the owner lives fast so
we can return their pets to them the same day," Grams
said. '
