Faculty senate's topic positions to affect students

Although the UNL Faculty Senate is a government of
the faculty, by the faculty and for the faculty, it some
times touches the lives of the students at UNL. .
For example, the academic calendar, set'by the NU
Board of Regents, is an indirect result of the senate's in
put through the Inter-campus Faculty Advisory Commi
tee under President Ronald Rosken. said Michael Turner
current senate president.
Turner said while th? regents decision for a common
calendar for all three NU campuses may not best serve the
need of all the student bodies, it always has been in UNL's
best interest. Any compromise has usually been made by
the Omaha campus, he said.
Turner said the current development of role admission,
statements also will affect students, but more indirect
ly. He said the statements will determine which of the
community and state colleges will work on which
projects, such as classroom instruction, research, and
public service.
"Role admission statements should spell out something
in the way of future plans for this campus," Turner said.
Turner said the Senate works mainly on the UNL
campus level and keeps in contact with Chancellor Roy
Young and other UNL administrators.
"The senate has a sympathetic and receptive car for1
the administrators of UNL . . . and we hope these ex-,
cellent channels of communication continue to exist,"
. Turner said.
, He also pointed out the faculty's liaison at the univer
sity level-the inter-campus committee. -
"Through the inter-campus committee the senate has '
: the opportunity to meet with the president and overall
university administrators on decisions concerning the
whole university," Turner said.
Committee members include NU administrators plus
the executive members of each individual campus senate.
According to Steven Sample, executive vice president
for academic affairs, one of the committee's recent
triumphs requiring close cooperation was the approval of
the faculty development fellowships.
He said the fellowships "give teachers an opportunity
to improve their background in a field, develop teaching
techniques or do research."
Appointments for the fellowships were made this
summer. Sample said much of the committee's time is
devoted to "faculty renewal and development" including
budget planning and recommendations to the regents.
Although decisions on these topics affect all three
campuses, Turner said the UNL senate's positions on these
issues may have an impact on their outcome.

Ticket sales start
Changes in athletic ticket buying procedures begin
today. Tickets may be purchased today from 9 a.m. to
12 noon and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the athletic ticket
office, 117 South Stadium Office Building,
; Students who purchased football tickets last spring can
pick them up with the following conditions:
-Each student must present his student identification
card with a new certificate of registration affixed and his
student football1 ticket receipt.
-Each student must pick up and sign for his own
ticket.
-Married students must show proof of marriage.
Students who did not purchase tickets in the spring,
including all new students, may purchase them for $29
under the following conditions:
Each full-time student must present his student
identification card with the new 1977-78 certificate of
registration affixed.
-Students who have not pre-registered will be permit
ted to purchase tickets only after they have completed
registration.
-Married students must show proof of marriage.
Eligible students with proper identification may pur
chase season basketball tickets. fof $10 'at' the"athletic ,
ticket office beginning Tuesday.

staff of the Regional Re
presentative for member
colleges and universities in
Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska
and Oklahoma.
The purpose of ACU-I is
to provide opportunities for
college unions and centers
to join in studying and
improving their organiza
tions, services, programs,
facilities and . personnel and
to' assist in the development
of new college unions.
The final results of the Associated Press
pre-season football poll are out and the
1977 Husker team failed to grab a top
spot.
' The Huskers finished 15th with 190
points in the AP'poll. The Oklahoma
Sooners grabbed the top notch with 1 ,068
points and 23 first place votes. UNL re
ceived no first-place ballots.
Colorado and Oklahoma State are the
only other Big 8 teams listed in the top 20.
The Buffs were picked 12th, the Cowboys,
20th.
Alabama, the Huskers' second foe this
season (Sept, 17), is listed sixth with one
first-place vote.
The Huskers and the Big 8 were favored
slightly higher in the United Press Inter
national pre-season report. Oklahoma was
rated third, UNL 10th, Colorado 14th.
Iowa State and Oklahoma State tied for
19th.
