UNL's Colleae of Architecture builds challenges
in contest to restore, remodel Architecture Hall
By Becky Brugman
Restoration and remodeling of Architecture Hall and
the feasibility of connecting it to the Former Law College
are the challenges of a contest sponsored by the College
of Architecture.
The contest is open to all practicing Nebraska Archi
tects and alumni of the college, said Cecil Steward,
College of Architecture dean and professional adviser for
the competition.
In addition to remodeling, the plans submitted also
must relate to energy efficiency, he said.

"The projects must be a demonstration for construc
tion andor remodeling for minimum energy consump
tion." Steward said the remodeling project is complex. The
contest will allow more ideas to be submitted than it a
private firm had been immediately hired to do the work.
'The Architecture School has a distinct public rela
tions task, and every interested architect will be allowed
to compete," he said, adding that an equal opportunity
exists for all.
The third benefit of the contest is that students and
faculty can observe the entire process and it can thus serve
as an educational tool, he said.
"The contest will hopefully produce a better overall
. plan," he said.
Steward said that although the contest was funded by
-the Legislature, actual funds for the implementation of
the plan has not yet been allocated. A separate budget
proposal for the first phase of the project will be
submitted with the 1978-79 budget for capitol
construction.
First prize for the contest is $4,000 and a letter of in
tent to award the commission for redesigning the building
(the application of the winning plans). The letter will
equal from $200,000 to 250,000 in professional costs to
the winning firm.
Second prize is $10,000 and third is $6,000. Steward
said these serve as. a consolation prize to those who did
a strong job of competing and to help cover the costs of
submitting the plans.
William Turnbiill from San Franci.wn Pik n
from Minneapolis and William Marlin from New York wn
be the out-of-state judges. A faculty representative and
Harley Schrader, director of the physical plant also Jn
serve as judges, he said.
Registration for the contest is due by Sept. 1 and en
