Summer Nebraskan 4 August 1977 22 Page Four Court 'victory' probably won't change budget system Turnabout is fair play. Just weeks after the NU Board of Regents lowered the fiscal axe on University administrators by directing them to maintain student fees budgets at their 1976-77 levels, the Nebraska Supreme Court has firmly established the Board's own spending responsibilities. The regents have already stopped cheering their highly touted 'Victory" last week. One wonders if they really wanted it at all. Right now the regents, NU administrators and the legislature's appropriations committee are all studying the court decision carefully. First, to find out exactly what it says, and second (one may assume) to figure out all the loopholes. If there is really any change, the system will probably be able to absorb it quite easily. More probably, the situation won't even change at all. 1:1; I I ft ' .WV I. . Even though it can only make recommendations on that money's use, those recommendations will have to be taken very seriously by the regents. The legislature, if it gets pushy, can always cut subsequent budgets if the regents refuse to spend tax dollars the way it recommends. There's only one group that will lose if there are any serious squabbles in the future between the Board of Regents and the legislature: the students. It's ironic that they're the only ones that don't have any say in the process. . As noted below, this is. the final issue of the Summer Nebraskan for this year. Despite the many 1 1 th-hour efforts (literally) it needed and 1 8-hour Tuesdays, from this vantage point it looks like it was worth it. The staff is pictured to the left. From left to right: Kent Swain, Andy Riggs, Rex Henderson and Steve Boerner. Unfortunately, it wasn't possible to collect all of the overworked and underpaid freelancers that contributed to the Summer Nebraskan for the photo. To mention a few: Mark Young, Jim Williams, Duane Grosse, Carla Engstrom, Tarn Lee, Doug Weil and Michael Zangari. And of course, our fine part-time secretaries, who kept us company and also restrained us from burning down the office on a couple of occasions: Nancy Winans and Kay Retzlaff. The Summer Nebraskan will be back next year, but we won't. For us the summer is finally beginning. Better late than never.
