In the UNL University Theatre production of Th$
Merry Wives of Windsor, the character of Mistress Page
sums it up for ell of us (not only .wives): "Wives may be
merry, but honest, too."
This lively, boisterous play, which opened last Friday,
is indeed full of both merriment and honesty. Director
William Morgan has molded the crew into a set of fan
tastic characters. Each actor takes his or her role and
transforms it into a comical view of life that the entire
audience can enjoy.
Falstaff, played by Eric Sorenson, has the necessary
gusto and conceit to make you laugh, but he still has
some personal foibles that you have to sympathize with.

- The audience knows from the start that his pompous
'attitudes will get him nothing but trouble and -the
audience' even finds out about the plans to trick him.
However, the real fun of the evening comes from watch
ing how Falstaff is deceived in his lustful endeavors.
That' is the secret of Morgan's directorial skills in Merry
' Wives. "
The way the play fits together is much like the way the
characters conform to their needs. Loreda Sinister plays
a greedy yet agreeable handmaiden to a "t." Cliff Rad
cliff ' as Frank Ford is a perfect representation" of comi
cally jealous rase as he fumes oyer his wifs's alleged adul
tery. And foppishness with a capital F" describes Doug
; Anderson's portrayal of Shallow. ..
" The scene-stealsr of the show, however, has to be Jack -Honor
as the crazy little French physician, Doctor Caius.

"A beautiful and poetic film which captures the spirit of chil
dren's imaginations. An evocation of childhood, aided immeas-'
urably by the miraculous performances trice has elicited from
his child-actors; a film that everyone in Lincoln should not
miss.

Although the character Is indeed little in stature, his antics
in motion and malapropism make him a giant.
Under all the fine qualities of the cast, there lies the
ultimate responsibility; the direction. Morgan gets the
best out of people which includes rowdy staging that
avoids over playing the laughs. The subtle humor comes
through with double entendres and gestures to match.
Movement on stage flows with meaning instead of resemb
ling a time to move around a bit" mood.
, This was especially notable because Merry Wives has
such a large cast and increased numbers of actors means
, blocking them as heards and not individuals.,
It does take a while for the play to gain momentum.
Within a matter of minutes, though the cast sparks and
the plot fires up..
Speaking of the plot, there lies a slight problem.
The involved subplots sometimes get too tangled to
follow easily.
The play will be at 8 "p.m.
Saturday at UNL's Howell Theatre.
