editors, students meet
By Mike Patten.-
A panel of students chosen to meet with
en accreditation team currently reviewing
the NU Medical Center and UNL, told the
accreditation team there are faults in the
present UNL advising program .
According tq Mary Johnson, ASUN
secretary, the students told the accredita
tion team members that in many instances,
advisors either had too many students to ;
advise or not enough time for their
advisees. , ,
Johnson was not one of the 1 1 students
chosen to meet with the accreditation
team, but attended the Monday meeting as
ASUN secretary in the chancellor's office.
"They (accreditation team members)
were extremely open," Johnson said.
"They wanted to hear otir answers, and we
wanted to answer their questions."
According to Johnson, the team
members asked the students for their
impressions of the university. She said they
asked the students why they came to UNL,
what they thought UNL had to offer, what
problems they saw at UNL, what changs
they would make and what they did not
like about the university.
In addition, the accreditation team had
lunch Monday with some members of the
NU Board of Regents. ASUN President and
Student Regent Greg Johnson said the
accreditation team asked them the same
type of questions.
" Johnson said they asked him how
satisfied he was with the caliber of educa
tion at UNL, what types of professors he
had, how UNL compared to any . other
school he attended and how well he
worked with the Board of Regents.
Johnson said he told the team that his
political science classes at UNL are about
the same as the political science class he
took at Augustana College in Sioux Falls,
SI). ; , ,
Johnson said he has not been a Student
Regent long enough to really know how
well the Board operates, but said he
thought the Board was not just a rubber
stamp organization.
"They (the Regents) are very independv
ent of the administration: They give each
campus quite a bit of autonomy," he said.
None of the accreditation team
members were allowed to talk to the press,
according to the Assistant Vice Chancellor
of Academic Affairs, Ned Hedges. '
