Hipp-just a few names that did not turn
the heads of Huskcr football recruiters.
But even though the three did not
attract "overwhelming" attention when in
hfeh school, they decided to try a shot at
becoming a Husker.

The rules state that if you didn't see a
chalk, mirker two-tenths of a mile after
you turned, you were going the wrong
way. Eut even though we didn't see one
after we turned, we decided it was an
oversight and stayed on that road, again
heading north out of Lincoln.
We kept driving on that road, check
ing each intersection for markers, until
I'm sure each one of us wanted to say we
were wrong, but none of us wanted to ad
mit it.
When we reached the end of that road,
we were in . trouble. There we were in
the country, nothing but cows and beer
cans all around us, and we didn't .know
which way to turn.
Of course, we tried both ways. Logical
solution. Neither way had the coveted
chalk markers. -
By that time, it had started to rain and
it dawned on me that this may not be the
piece of cake I had thought. V
Apparently Skip was thinking the same
thing. "How can three intelligent college
students miss chalk markers and get lost
in the country?" he asked.
We decided to back track and double
check if the markers were there. Still no
luck, even though Phil jumped out and
checked the side of the road to make sure
they were not hidden. Soon we were back
to check point one. -: '
After -taking the alternative route and
- still finding no markers, we began to enter
tain thoughts of driving directly to the
party, .which destination had been given
Dreams of starting for the HusHcrs were
certainly that-dreams.
All three players were walk-ons. They
practiced with big names" who got big
scholarships. Eut early this week, Ibtr,
Steward and Hipp were listed No. 1 on the
Huskers' depth chart.
Hager, 6-foot-l and 170 lbs. is the
smallest Husker quarterback, A Lincoln
to us at the beginning of the rally.
Not being a quitter, I hesitated to tgrce.
That wouldn't be fair to ourselves, I
argued. Phil, however, convinced me.
"Would you rather be fair and miss
the party, or cheat a little and get there,"
he asked me. Nothing like putting things
in proper perspective. v
. When we discovered we had better stop
at a gas station or we wouldn't get there
at all, we made a last ditch attem pt to find
the route. But those elusive markers just
weren't to be found.
By this time, we had figured that we
were about 25 miles over the mileage we
should have attained. We "pulled out our
trusty map that led us to the party,
Lc and behold, we were among the first
who reached the destination. Don't let that
deceive you, though, we were coming from
the opposite direction than anyone who
had finished the rally would be headed.
Oh well, I thought, a party's a party, no
matter how you get there. It just goes to
show what a little overconfidence will do;
Anyway, what would I ever have written
about if we had done it right?
