Washburn meet pleases, surprises crew team coach By Kevin Schnepf UNL crew member Al McDonald said the water at Branched Oak Lake was "super" for the Husker's first meet victory Saturday over Washburn University of Topeka, Kan. "For this meet, we had much calmer water than in the Kansas State (University) match last weekend," McDonald said referring to the Husker's home opening loss last week. McDonald was a member of the varsity heavyweight team which defeated UNL's varsity lightweight team by one and-a-half lengths and Washburn's heavyweight team by three lengths. First year Husker coach Frank Sands said he was pleased with the heavyweights and said he was surprised with the lightweights' performance on the 1,750-meter course. "We rowed 100 per cent better than against Kansas State," Sands said. "The heavies looked very strong and you'll be seeing a lot more out of the lightweights. "When we get some more water time, you'll see a lot of improvement," he said. The Husker heavyweight team, in its second race of the season, finished the course in 40-degree weather with a time of seven minutes. "We've bee practicing in Abel (Residence Hall) pool," McDonald said. "We really need some water time because the pool is just not the same as the outdoors." McDonald, a sophomore from Lincoln, teamed up with sophomores Dan Spencer, Ron Wallman, Mac Welch; juniors Don Weldon, Tony Scott and Jim Dalton and senior Dave Volkman. Washburn head coach Don Craig said he was impressed with the Huskers' heavyweights. , "We swept Oklahoma State (University) last week," he said, "but I knew we had no business competing with Nebraska's heavies." Washburn's novice team (first year rowers) won the second race in 7:20.0. UNL's women's varsity squad placed second, followed by the Huskers' novice team and the Huskers' freshmen. The Huskers, who have competed on Capitol Beach in previous years, will host one more meet this year at Branched Oak Lake. Notre Dame University comes to Lincoln April 16. Sands said it will be a competitive meet. The UNL crew will travel to Kansas next weekend for two meets. The Huskers will face Wichita State University at Wichita Saturday and row in a triangular meet Sunday at Manhattan, Kan., against the University of Minnesota and Kansas State.
