A special topics class in
the management of volun
teer organizations has at
tractcd several fraternity
and sorority officers, said
Ron Smith, dean of the
UNL college of business
administration.
Hie class was offered for
the first time this semester
and has 27 students mostly
juniors and seniors, he said.
Smith teaches the class.
Last fall a group of stu
dents interested in commun
ity organizations such as
United Way requested a
class in the management of
such organizations, Smith
said. Since then, news of the
class has passed among
students and attracted
various fraternity and sor
ority officers, he said.
Students receive credit
for the class just as they
would for any other man
agement class, he said. A te
gular classroom format is
followed, Smith said, how
ever there have been several
guest speakers, such as Lin
coln Mayor Helen Boosa
lis. The class has studied the
selection of goals, leader
ship, changes, behavior and
education, Smith said.
Special topics classes
"need flexibility" Smith
said, and the class probably
would not be offered next
semester to accommodate
another special interest
group.
As a result of the class,
Smith said, there have been
certain aspects in volunteer
leadership that he would
like to incorporate into the
regular management classes.
Devaney
says no
UNL athletic director
Bob Devaney has indicated
he wants to keep his name
to himself-or at least not
loan it to the football field
in Memorial Stadium.
The Nebraska Legislature
has been battling over nam
ing the new sports complex
after Devaney. Last week
a compromise proposal to
name the new building the
Nebraska Sports Complex
and the field after Devaney
wasy made.
Devaney has written a
letter to Lincoln Sen.
Roland Luedtke, speaker of
the Legislature, asking that
his name not be given to the
field.
Devaney wrote that sta
diums are synonymous with
the playing fields.
"Stadiums are filled with
fans drawn by the feats of
sportsmanship and courage
on the field. The field is
the stadium's heart," he
said.
: Noting that the stadium
was built in commemora
tion of Nebraska's war dead,
he wrote," I feel we should
not ' in any way detract
from the glory of the men
of Nebraska who made their
supreme sacrifice for their
country."
Bdtevue Sea. Frank
Lewis who introduced the
original till to name the
complex after Devaney, told
the Omaha Worid-Herald
last Friday that he will
make one more attempt to
name the complex after
Devaney before letting the
121 be killed.
