Lawrence. ,
"Frankly I was surprised by the strength of Nebraska,"
Gcnier said. "They just had a little lack of depth. I felt
Francis Allen did a remarkable coaching job, I was also
surprised it was such a close meet throughout. Nobody
folded."
Though the Huskers may not field a team at the
national meet, four Musker gymnasts will attend as in
dividual performers.
Seniors Duane West and Kurt Mackie and juniors
Larry Gerard and Mike Cosrove will compete because
they finished in the top three in their events at the Dig
8 meet.
Although Gerard lost his all-around crown to OU's
Bart Connor, a former Olympian, he qualified in three
events for ths NCAA meet. Gerard defended his hihbar
tub in wiante that event and finished second in the floor
exsrdse and the still rinp. West won the floor ejsercisa
competition, He was runner-up in that event in 1976.
West also qualified in' the high bar with a third place fin
iii. Cosgrove LiUd second in the pommel horse and
Msckie third in the still rings to advance to Tempe.
Other top finishers for the Huskers included a sixth
place for junior Steve Todd In the pommel horse, a fifth
place finish for freshman Kevin Dunkley in the still rings,
a sixth place for freshman Rich Brindisi in the vault, and
a fourth place finish for senior Gary Jeurink on the high
bar. ' '
Li addition to their top three finishes, Gerard took a
fourth in the vault and a fifth in the parallel bars and West
finished fifth in the vault.
