Kimball presents
Czech orchestra
The Kimb&Il Recitd IhS Czech Fest continues at 8
ton&ht featuring the Czech State Orchestra.
However, the scries experienced problems when two of
the original three concerts were changed or cancelled.
The first, famous violinist, Josef Suk, was cancelled be
cause he was ill.
The second offering, the Prague Chamber Orchestra,
went off without a hitch Feb. 19.
However,' the last performance ran into some trouble.
The Czech Philharmonic Orchestra was the initial choice
but the Czech Government Arts Agency, Praconcert,
canceEsd the group's U. S. tour. To replace it, the Czech
State Orchestra was booked. .
The ensemble often is called the Czech State Orchestra
of Drao in honor of its city of birth. In 1956, Bretislav
Caklava reorganized the. Czech Radio Orchestra and in
creased the number of musicians to 113, the orchestra's
present size:
The orchestra tours throughout the world. This is
its second UJS. trip and follows a recent concert in Bris
tol, England. -
In England, the orchestra's artistic director and princi
pal conductor, Jiri Waldhans, was reviewed as "an ex
tremely beguiling conductor.'" Waldhans will he conduc
tor for the Kimball concert.
The program will consist of Smetana's symphonic
poem, "Sarka from the Bohemian Woods and Meadows,"
and Dvorak's ''Symphony No. 8 in G Major," Czech com
positions. The third piece is Beethoven's Symphony No.
7."
The Czech State Orchestra's appearance and the Czech
Fest Series is financed by the Stephen Jelinek Memorial
Concert "Fund. The fund was established last year through
the University Foundation by the estate of Jelinek's
daughter, Viola Carmen Jelinek.
She left $33 million to subsidize concerts at UNL. The
money also was designated to provide the concerts at
reduced student ticket prices.
Tickets are available at the Kimball box office and are
$4 for students and $7 for general admission.
