Complaints about UNL's parking situation were voiced
at a meeting sponsored by the UNL Parking Liaison Board
Thursday.
Three students and a UNL staff member went before
the board to voice their opinions.
Barb Berry, board chairman, said the purpose of the
meeting was to find out what a majority of students want
in the way of parking improvements and to discuss the
possibility of raising parking permit fees to $60 next year.
. Lyle George, a sophomore from Dixon, said he would
like to see more parking on East Campus around Burr
Fedde Residence Halls where a shortage of parking exists.
"We can park in an Area 30 lot on 33rd Street, but it is
an unimproved lot and is not a safe area," he said.
George said that a hold-up has occurred in the lot and
that women in Burr-Fedde are afraid to park there.
The problem of City Campus students parking in East
Campus lots is also a problem, he said. George suggested
that students illegally parked in East Campus lots should
be ticketed.
Ken Marienau, a sophomore from Keamey, said the
university needs more parking spaces on campus. He said
the university should combine Area 2 and Area 3 lots into
one lot.
"Parking will depend on how much everyone is willing
to pay, but $60 is ridiculous," he said. "We are being
nickled and dimed to death here."
Marienau said any increase in parking fees should be
separate from student fees.
Sylvia Reed, a UNL custodian, said she was opposed to

any increase in parking fees. She said the current $25
price was already too high.
Barry said the price increase was proposed by UNL
Parking Coordinator John Duve in an effort to encourage
students to carpool and save money and to decrease the
number of cars on campus.
Doug Miller, a board member from Genoa, said a lot of
people think an increase to $60 is a joke, but an increase
next year is a reality.
Mike Gibson, a sophomore from Omaha said he was
concerned with the safety in the lot "north of Harper,
Schramm and Smith Residence Halls.
"The lowness of the . curb and guard rail by the
drainage ditch can cause cars to go over it when it is icy,"
he said.
Gibson, a Harper resident, said he had talked to John
Duve, and new guard rails have been ordered, but they are
too short and only will worsen the problem.
Miller said the recommendations given to the board
Thursday will be submitted to Duve and the Parking
Regulations Board will act on them.
