Photo by John Cranctr Si iFffiQC J' L-5i B tisl ai Working American theatre is difficult, especially for the young actor, but there is a lot of work cropping up outside of New York and Los Angeles. If you want to be a star, you eventually have to go there, according to Bill Kirk, UNL asst. theatre professor. Even though Kirk hasn't worked those cities, he said he would eventually like to teach, act and direct profes sionally there. After coming from Southern Methodist University in Dallas two years ago, Kirk said he was surprised by "the talent pool" of UNL actors. He added that UNL could be considered one of the "excellent actor training schools." Kirk contributes to the Theatre Dept. program by teaching three acting methods that dominate American theatre today. They include: the American, the English Technical and the Alexander method. The American method, started by Russian director Stanislavsky consists of the actor "working out of him self' so he portrays himself reacting for the part, Kirk said. UNL theatre is based on the Stanislavsky-American acting method, the "major force of acting training in the country," Kirk said. The English Technical method is an exterior approach to acting that deals with phrasing, movement and timing, he said. However, the Alexander method studies individuals' movements and habits. The result develops actors' new movement patterns and helps remove tension, Kirk said. Kirk, who studied the Alexander method for two years, said it is becoming one of the major movements taught in the country. Teaching comes in a variety of forms. Directing is one way to teach, said Kirk, who directed the Howell produc tion of Tlie Country VAfe last fall. "Every time I direct, I bring my life experiences to the actor," he said. 'The goal of the director is to help the actor." Kirk has worked with a Shakespeare company in Dallas and said he plans to act, teach and direct as part of his theatre involvement this semester. mam Sheldon Art Gallery, 12th&KSts. . "Rape is ultimately a question of intimidation and bru.3 force a real and threatening possibil ity to most women.
