Nebraska shown in photos
By Jerry DeLorenzo
A clear-cut picture of
Nebraska is now showing
at the Sheldon Memorial
Art Gallery. ,
Robert Starck and Lynn
Dance's Nebraska Photo
graphic Documentary pro
ject displays 200 black and
white photographs that por
tray Nebraska lifestyles. The
display runs until April 30.
Starck and Dance began
two years ago after receiving
a grant from the Nebraska
Bicentennial Committee and
the Nebraska Arts Council. .
Since then they have
compiled 20 to 25,000
negative frames in their
travels while photographing
Nebraska and its inhabi
tants. They are organizing a
campaign drive for funds in
April, May and June to help
pay bills along with request
ing another grant for an
extra year's work.
The show clearly depicts
many rural communities
throughout western
Nebraska but does hot have
many pictures . of urban
areas in the state.
Starck and Dance say
with another year of work
they would concentrate on
Nebraska's urban centers.
"Every person is
complex and an individual,"
Starck said. "We tried to
put people in their natural
surroundings and usually we
would have them pick
where they wanted to be
photographed."
Starck said many times
he and Dance would run
into difficulty getting
people to pose.
"When you take a pic
ture of someone you are
capturing a moment of their
privacy," Starck said.
Dance said there is still
work that needs to be done.
We need to do more
work in the ethnic
pockets," he said. "That is
an area where we can really '
get involved."

"Rape is ultimately a
question of intimidation
and brute force a real
and threatening possibil
ity to most women. This
is a very fine, personal
and painful film about
rape... a complex and
frightening study of what
happens to a woman
who has been raped."
