State p ays if NU is a tax exempt institution, but a bill, those hearing by the Appropriations Committee was Thursday, proposes mak ing some changes in that law. The bill (LB437), introduced by the Constitutional Revision and Recreation Committee, would require that the state pay Saunders County for the money lost by NlTsuseof land. NU owns 9,400 acres in Mead for the Nebraska Agricultural Experimental Sta tion. The bill, improperly drafted as a piece of legislation, will be revised as a proposed constitutional amendment. Bellwood Sen. Loran Schmit said all 93 counties benefit from the station's re search, but Saunders County receives few economic benefits. "The county (Saunders) bears the entire economical cost of the facility,, Schmit said. ' The station pays no property tax, which would amount to about $193,000. The county also must provide road maintenance to the facility, and doei not receive "corresponding benefits, Schmit said. The people of Saunders County are not unreasonable , he said. "They have lived with this facility for many years. UNL lobbyist William Swanson testify ing at the hearing, said the proposal, if it is not amended, is unconstitutional.
