Inaccurate free throw shooting hurt the UNL basket ball team in a 61-58 loss Saturday to the University of Kansas (KU) in the . first round of the Eig 8 Conference playoff in Lawrence, Kan. The Huskers shot almost 47 per cent from the field in the contest, but could hit only 14 of 22 free throws. KU made only 38 per cent of its shots from the field, but only missed two attempts from the free throw line in 13 tries. The Jayhawks had 19 more attempts from the field. UNL, led in scoring by senior Bob Siegel with 19, was leading by as many as five points with eight minutes left in the game. But Jayhawk center Ken Koenigs and guard John Douglas led a KU comeback that tied the score at 56 with 2:27 to play. The score was tied 17 times during the game. UNL only could manage a Brian Banks jumper in the remaining time, as KU iced the game with clutch free throws. KU, which advances to the semifinals in Kansas City with a 18-9 record, made 11 steals against the Huskers. UNL could not manage a single steal. UNL was unable to capitalize on KlPs foul trouble late in the second half. Nebraska was into the one-andone . situation (seven team fouls by the opponent in the half) early in the second half. . . Koenigs, Herb Nobles and Clint Johnson, all starters for KU, had four fouls apiece in the second half. Nobles fouled out after he scored 10 points. Douglas led the Jayhawks in scoring with 23 and Koenigs added 11. Sophomore center Carl McPipe was the only Husker besides Siegel in double figures as he finished with 18. McPipe fouled out of the game with less than a minute remaining. The Huskers finished the year 15-14, losing their last four games. ICU will play Kansas State University Thursday in Kan sas Gty in semifinal play. KSU beat Iowa State Univer sity , 97-62, in Manhattan, Kan. Saturday. In. other Big 8, play,, the University of Oklahoma defeated the University of Colorado, 68-56, and the University of Missouri downed Oklahoma State Uni versity, 92-74. Sports Complex. The Huskers, who led the first two dys of the three day meet, lost to KU, 353-330, for the third time this year. "I was disappointed, but our girls swam well, said UNL coach Ray Huppert. "I know our girls have the ability to beat Kansas.' The Hxkers did, however, qualify individuals in three ' events for the Addition of Litereoneate Ath letics for Women (AIAW) championships March 17 through 19 at Brown University. Anne Watland qualified for the AIAW champion ships in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:06.263. watland also was on two relay teams that qualified for nationals. The 200-yard medley rsky consisting of Watland, Cindy Agee, Ellen Hollander and Mdanie Jakob qualified with a time of 1 :54 .86. The four also swam in the 400- yard medley it hy, which qualified for the nationals with a time of 4: 10.1. Huppert said UNL national qualifiers include three freshmen and one sophomore. "It wd be a new experience for them. Well have to get back to practice and prepare. Huppert add the regional meet was scheduled too close to the 3 8 Conference championships last week. - "Every team was coming off championship meets, he said. "That's six days of swimming within 10 Cays and it's very hard on the athletes to come back. The scheduling of events was poor and I want to stress that it was our fault as coaches to let this happen." KU coach Gary Kempf sdd he was pleased to beat UNLtgaia. "We didnt swim well until the last day, he said. "The meet was very competitive and the pool was just beautiful.
