friday, february 18, 1977 daily ncbrcskcn All-around oiEil By Rob Barney Participating in sports to Kathy Hawkins is just like the bad habit you can't stop once you start. "It's kind of hard to stop once you've been active in sports," Hawkins said. "Ill continue to play tennis after I graduate, but itll be hard to play basketball on the same competitive level." The senior from Omaha hasn't been able to kick the sports habit since participating in golf, volleyball, tennis, track, and soft ball during her prep days at Omaha Burke High School. As a basketball guard she has been the team's second leading scorer and assist leader the past two seasons. ev f i "If we would win the national championship," basketball coach George Nicodemus said, "Kathy would be an All American." Hawkins is also a member of the UNL tennis team. Last season she finished second in the state college tournament in singles competition behind teammate Joyce McVicker. She also teamed with McVicker to win the doubles title. The competitive level of women's athletics is one of the differences Hawkins said she has noticed during her four years at UNL. "Everything has changed since I was a freshman," she said. Ve never spent more than a day on the road and we only got two dollars a day for food. Now we have more money. We travel every weekend." Hawkins said she has noticed a great change in athletic ability. "Programs in the high schools have really helped," she said. "It used to be a freshman coming in (to UNL) would have to be taught the basic skills, now she has already learned them." Hawkins said she never played on an organized team before her freshman year at UNL "I played sand lot basketball and I have always enjoyed the game," she said. Hawkins is the lone senior on the basketball team, but does not see herself in any special role because of that distinction. "I dont see myself as a leader," she. 1. "We have a very close team and we get along together well, and I think each one of us at one time or another has responsibilities to take care of." Ilawkins said she has one more goal to accomplish as a basketball player. "I expect to win the state tournament and I'll be disappointed if we didnt win regionals. I would also like to take nationals but I think you have to be realistic," she said. Almost before Hawkins puts away her basketball gear, she will be on the tennis court preparing for her final season. Hawkins is expecting an improved tennis team this season under the direction, of first year coach Sig Garnett. .
