ob availability
depends on area
Although 12 per cent more Teachers College graduates
found teaching jobs in 1976 than In 1975, Lee DeJonge,
director of Teacher Placement, said he does not think
there are many more teaching jobs available.
DeJonge said he thought students were getting more
advice on which areas of teaching were overcrowded.
He said there is great demand in some areas of teaching
and students are going into those fields.
"Saying that the teaching field is overcrowded is like
saying the price of all fruit is high because oranges are
expensive," DeJonge said.
The areas of social studies and physical education
are crowded, he said, although teachers in industrial arts,
rmUi, general science, high school special education and
agriculture are in demand.
DeJonge said Teachers College enrollment increased
80 students this year after a steady decline since 1970.
One of the problems in counseling students is that they
do not get to the students who transfer from Arts -and
Sciences College in time to tell them which areas are over
crowded, he said.
Teachers College students also are advised to have dual
endorsements (majors) where arts and Science students
are not, DeJonge added.
Another reason that Teachers College graduates do not
get hired is they restrict themselves to a certain area,"
DeJonge said. He added that this is often the case with
married couples. . . '
DeJonge said surveys taken at June graduations show
that about 10 per cent of the graduates go on to graduate
school, one percent go into the military, and two per cent
do not plan to teach.
Students are counseled in jobs other than teaching that
they can get in their field, he said. For instance, DeJonge
said, an endorsement in Business Administration gives the
student an automatic secretarial job opportunity.
DeJonge said he though the image of UNL provides
some help in getting a job since the Teachers College has
a good program.
