thursdsy, fsnusry 17, 1977 dsily nsbredcen - 8 ast union's rooms 'in tune' with campus tone " . . . . . . Bv Ejrbsra Lutz The new Nebraska East Union opens today on East Campus, 18 months after groundbreaking and following several years of discussion about it. It is one of the first university buildings to be constructed on schedule, said Daryl Swanson, associate director of the Neb raska Union who will manage the new building. "We attempted to name all the rooms in the union in tune with the tone of the East Campus," said Tony Warner, programming and recreation director. In the new Union students and faculty may eat under the "Cloud," play pool, pinball or bowl in the "North 40," watch movies and listen to speakers in the "Prairie" and read in the "Loft", The parallelogram-shaped building has student and administrative offices on the .third floor, food service for Burr-Fedde residence hall occupants and the public, study areas, lounge and recreation areas, banquet, meeting .and entertainment rooms, a bookstore, classroom and offices for the UNL Department of Foods and Nutrition. Swanson said, "If there was ever an . 1 NEW STORE HOURS ovar-pr.rd facility, this is it." When construction began, he said, the projected East Campus population for 19S0 was 4,000 students. However, that figure was surpassed in 1976, he said. The building cost $4.34 million, with $3.8 million of the total in construction costs and the remainder in equipment, Swanson said. The building has been paid for out of a surplus available in the bond reserve fund, but all money must be paid back, Swanson said. Student fees for the next 35 years will be used to pay back the bonds at the rate of $3.50 per semester per student, beginn ing in fall 1977, he said. Students will pay $2.50 each for operation beginning this semester. . Seven student organizations were chosen from 80 or 90 applications for office space in the East Union. Offices will be provided on a yearly basis with space provided for the following NU organiza tions this year: 4-H Club, Block and Bridle Club, the Rodeo Association, Alpha Zeta agriculture honorary, Horticulture Club, Agronomy Qub and the American Home Economics Association, Continued on p. 8 1 . - Scott Svoboda The new Nebraska East Union located on East Campus opens today as schedded. m m o Mon-Fri 9-5:30 Sat 9-5:30 SS-B T Disco Art Materials 1030 Que St. o n u r ti . . u ' 3 si 1 H - III Applications for University Program and Facilities Fees Ending to qualified stu dent organizations) re now available in the Center for Students and Organiza tions, Room 200 Nebraska Union.
