A good pisce of pottery is something beautiful to look

ning at 9 a.m. Friday in the Woods Art Eld Plants also

Art Prof. Tom Sheffield said students will receive two
thirds of the profit of each piece and the pottery depart
ment will receive a third of the profits. If many items are
unsold, the sale may continue Saturday.
The profits from the previous year were used to buy
the department two electric pottery wheels and an electric
kiln, Sheffield said.
The trend in pottery is a style known as California
Funk. It's popular in pottery magazines and it centers on
objects such as ceramic door knobs. .
"It would be easier to get into grad school with funk
stuff," Cook said. But he said his work centers on func
tional pottery.
The philosophies among the students, and teachers
seem to be as Civsrss as the art they produce. v
"To rmk art personal is the hardest thing,' Cook said,
and to have a "good eye" is important.

However, Sheffield does not limit the definition. He
' said a specific definition would not allow students to
expand themselves.
Still, he said, it's "based on experience and exposure
to a variety of things" and a development of a palate."
Individuals choose the art field for a variety of rea
sons. Ray was a former pre-med student and took up pottery
as "therapy for my mind." He took a drawing class and
said he discovered it was as difficult as chemistry but a
better way of expressing himself.
"Besides, I get to look at nude models. I can't think of
anything else I'd rather do than look at nude women all
day," he added.
Defining students in pottery, Ray said, "Five per cent
are serious artists. Eighty per cent are sorority girls who
relate pottery along the line of Garmisch boots, painter's
pants and TransAnis. The rest are not slow and not
fast, they're just half-fast."
