one realizes that underneath the quick one-liners and
clumsiness, the clown hurts. -
!n many ways, Allen respectfully is kissing the entire
Casablanca and Bogart myth good-bye. It's all there, "the
same old story, a fight for love and glory," but Bogart's
message comes through loud and clear.
Be yourself. Don't try to be Bogart, don't leave half
open books that "you haven't read around your
apartment, don't try and project any image that isn't your
own.
The final product is a fine movie in an old fashioned
sense of the word. Play it Again Sam doesn't have a
strikingly happy ending, but one leaves it feeling good
And that's half the battle.
1 don't mean to play down the comedy elements in the
movie. The laughs are constant, the humor is off-teat, and
it comes at you at a machine gun rate. Pretty much the
type of humor one expects from a Woody Allen movie.
What makes it a cut above its nearest competitors
in the market -the Monty Pythons and the Mel Brooks-is
the fact that it is not as predictable or as lacking in
sensitivity. .
Even the slapstick-Allen's classic battle with his blow
dryer or the painful scene where he gestures' with an
album cover is his hand and sends the record rocketing
across the room-is done with a humanity that makes so
many other comedy movies pale with their sterile nature.
Exactly how much the NEC censors will take out of
the movie remains to be seen. One would hope the editing
would be somewhat restrained and the commercial
breaks few, but 1 think I know better than to hope too
much.
Even with that risk, this" just may be a rare night, one.
that could be worth while just to stay home, prop your
feet up and sit back and watch a fine film.
