must be awarded in at least three fields.
UNL salaries for faculty members also fall below the
national average in total compensation figures, including
retirement funds and insurance.

said he is disturbed by salary trends. Ifc said he thinks it
is distressing that salaries at UNL "differ so little' from
salaries at the University of Nebraska at Omaha when
UNO is a Class 2 institution in the AAUP study.
A Class 2 school is one that has a basic undergraduate
program and also offers masters degrees.
Salaries at UNO are $300 to $500 lower than UNL
salaries for assistant professor through professor positions.
But at the instructor level, UNO salaries are $S00 higher
than at UNL. However, salaries are not the main concern
of professors, Baumgarten said.
"No one would be teaching just for the salary,'
Baumgarten said. "If you don't want to teach, don't go
into teaching.
- He said professors are "doing what they want to do.
Don Haack, UNL engineering mechanics professor and
AAUP president-elect at UNL, said salary inadequacies
are "brought up every year, but our fortune has not been
moving on very well."
Faculty members are neither satisfied nor rebellious,
Haack said. "The best description is discouraged, he
added.

For instance, Larry Pes ton left UNL for the Unrenfty
of ELnois-Chicao. There he has a lighter teaching load
and about $3,503 more than he was making at UNL,
Robinson said. Poston was "one of the best professors I
have ever known, Robinson added.
Robinson said higher salaries depend on legislative
appropriations. He said NU president D. B. Varner has
done a good job of persuading legislators to increase
university budgets, and he hoped the new president would
do likewise.
A replacement for Varner, who leaves in January to
head the NU Foundation, has not been named.

Salary increases should be given on a merit system,
Williams said. Last year, for the first timethe Legislature
allowed the university to award merit pay increases, he
added.
"The regents gave a 2 to 3 per cent increase to every
one, but more of a salary increase to those who deserve
it," Welch said.
Pay raises received
Previously, he said, there were across-the-board salary
increases. The bad faculty members received pay raises
as well as the good ones, he added.
"We have to convince the Legislature that the merit
raise money was wisely spent and this will improve
education,' Welch said.
Mueller said he opposes raising tuition for salary in
creases. Students are "paying all they're able to," he said.
V elch also opposed a tuition increase.
"It's not wholly up to students to fund pay hikes out
of their own pockets, Welch said. "UNL is already com
petitive in the tuition area." .
Colorado resident tuition hher .
In the Big 8, only Colorado has a higher resident tui
tion than UNL.
Johnson said he would favor tuition increases only if
"the regents could actually guarantee the extra money
would go for higher salaries and not more administrative
assistants and staff."
Much of UNL's budget increase has gone for "hori
zontal expansion, increasing size, not quality, according
to Johnson.
More money for faculty salaries could come from
abolishing or cutting back the State University of Neb
raska (SUN), he said.
Morgan said a lot of money was going into central
administration, making it "top-heavy."
