The largest carpet in Lincoln may be replaced in the
cert few years, according to UNL Athletic Director Bob
Bsvsssy." ,
Te're hoping that maybe the AstroTurf in Memorial
Stef?nni can be replaced within the next couple of years,"
Bevaary tdd. Te hare to decide how much we want to
replace of the turf that is in there now."
Beraney said he did not know how much the new
tsaftfcoM cost, but said estimates w2I be made.
Fisher, UNL Athletic Dept. business manager,
said a new rug would cost about $400,000.
Footing and gripping ability in some wom areas
hase caassed concern,
TLe rug is not causing any additional injuries," head
trailer Paul Schneider said. ItTs just that it is worn in
scsne areas and the footing is bad when it gets wet."
Schneider said rug burns received by football players
sports quiz
are no worse than the bums received from natural grass
and are in fact, easier to 'cleanup."
"I would not like to sec grass again," Schneider said.
TeVe been very sucessful with AstroTurf here. I believe
there have not been as many injuries since it was install
ed." The Memorial Stadium AstroTurf was installed in
1970. UNL was one of the first Big 8 Conference schools
to have artificial turf. The University of Missouri in Col
umbia is the only Big 8 Conference school that still does
not have artificial turf in its stadium.
"There is still a chance that we will get artificial turf,"
Missouri Sports Information Director Bill Callahan said,
"but it will be tied in with a stadium expansion."
Callahan said there is some opposition to putting
artificial turf in Faurot Field (Missouri's stadium).
"Coach Onofrio preferred natural turf when he first
started coaching here," Callahan said. "But his views
are changing a little now that a total stadium renovation
is involved. There are a lot of pros and cons on the sub
ject." .
Missouri has one of the few natural turf stadiums left
in the country among major colleges. Louisiana State
University, Southern California University and the Univer
sity of North Carolina still have natural turf.
Kansas State University, Iowa State University, Okla
homa State University and the University of Colorado
have installed AstroTurf in their stsdiums, while the
University of Oklahoma and the University of Kansas
both play on a different synthetic surface Tartan turf.
Nebraska players wear special shoes when playing on
Memorial Stadium's AstroTurf, depending on weather
conditions. The f tuskers wear soccer type shoes in dry
weather and shoes with short steel-tipped spikes in wetter
conditions.
Two University of Miami (Fla.) football players had
varying opinions of UNL's artificial turf.
It was one of the better we've played on," said Erie
backer Gregg VaHick. "It was much better than Colo
rado's (CU). There weren't as many scrapes."
Defensive tackle Dennis Dreckner said, "It was better
than CU's but I stul didn't like it. A rug Lie this is sticky
and the only thing that gives is knees and ankles. You get
a lot of burns, too."
Breckner said the main difference between Nebraska's
artificial surface and Colorado's was that it was wet in
Boulder when Miami played there and the backs had a
hard time making cuts.
