Midway through the third quarter of the Huskers'
64-10 drubbing of Texas Christian University (TCU)
Saturday, the game's outcome was no longer in doubt.
Many of the 74,981 fans began filing out in the third
quarter and by the game's end, only about 40,000 remain
ed. However the final one and a half quarters provided the
first opportunity for many of the third- and fourth-string
Huskers to be in the spotlight. Some responded like exper
ienced starters.
Sophomore I-back substitute Byron Stewart, one of
five Husker I-backs to play, was the Huskers' leading rush
er with 60 yards on 13 carries.
A redshirt last year, Stewart was running with the
scout team earlier in the week.
Feels he can play
"I've always wanted to play, I feel I can play. With the
blocking today it wasn't hard, Stewart said. "When you
get a chance you have to do your best because all the
backs here are good and competitive.'
Stewart said he feels the rule allowing home teams to
suit up an unlimited number of players has benefited him.
Last year home teams could suit up only 60.
"If they had the old rule, I probably wouldn't have
played," he said.
