I 1 1 I Homed Frogs feature air attack By Rob Barney . In 1973, with Texas Christian University (TCU) down in its football fortunes, the Horned Frogs hired a new head coach; Jim Shofner. ' Shofner, a 1957 TCU graduate, was a starting corner back" with the Gevebnd Crowns until ISC. During that . time, the Browns jvon one divisional championship and finished.no lower than third in the division standings. When he left the Crowns, Shofner returned as an assis tant coach to TCU for two years. In his first year, 1SS5, the Frogs went to the Sun Bowl, their last bowl appearance. Shofner went to the San Francisco 43srs in 1SS7 as an assistant coach. During his San Francisco stay, the 49ers won three divisional titles and advanced to the con ference finals twice. So, back in 73 when TCU hirw Horned Frogs fans thought some of hiss success might rub off on his teams. The Frogs had not had a winning season since 1971 and had only four in the past 15. Thiss not better , But instead of things getting better under Shofner, things have worsened somewhat. In 1974 the Frogs won their opening game rpinst the University of Texas El Paso, but then lost their last ten games. Last season the Southwest Conference (SWC) school won its last game of the season, 23-21 over Rice Univer sity to end a 2Q-c2.-ne losing streak, the longest in the nation. . TCU stands 0-2 coming into today's game, with losses to Southern ftfethodist University (SR.? U) and the Univer sity of Tennessee. , - Last week against Tennessee they passed for 291 yards but failed to score, losing 31-0. With last week's loss, Chofner's pre-season strategy might have gone down the drain. He had said that the Frogs cqu'd have a winning season if they could get an early victory. TCU sports an All-American candidate ' in wide re ciever KVke Renfro. The junior was AII-SVVC last season, leading the league with 49. catches for 810 yards, both TCUrecords." Other offensive threats for the Frogs 'include junior quarterback. Jimmy Dan Elzner and junior ful.'back Gerry lUSodzelewski. - , UNL's secondary should be expecting TCU to fill the sky with passes today. Besides Elzner's 231 -yard perfor mance against Tennessee last weekend, he also threw for 2S3 yards in the 34-14 loss to SMU. The Cornhusker secondary surrendered 231 yards through the air to In diana last Saturday. Lowe on dsfenss " Defensively the Frogs feature another Ail-American candidate in sophomore safety Darryl Lowe. Lowe ran a Vinos Ferragamo interception last year 70 yards for a touchdown. This is TCU's third road game in a row. Next weekend the Frogs travel to FayetteviSle. Ark., to face the Arkansas Razorbacks. ' " Not all could be lost for the Frogs this afternoon, however. Last year's 14 points against the Huskers was their second highest total of the ssason. They sacred 23 points against Rice in their season finale for their highest point total in 28 gsmcs. .
