' Who spent 22 hours last week indoor and
Memorial Stadium workouts, small group drills,
and learned a 19-page chart of detailed man
euvers? The football team?
No, it was the UNL marching band, during its
second annual Comhusker Band Camp which ran
from Sunday to Friday.
The band camp, an innovation brought to Neb
raska by Robert Fought, who took over last year
as director of the UNL marching band, stressed
marching basics such as the march step, turns, and
other fundamentals. Band members also learned a
19-page, pre-game show.
Band had hard' week
With large name tags around their necks and
canvas mailbags full of charts and music, band
members marched and played through what
Fought described as their hardest week of the
year.
Many wore T-shirts .saying Mellophones are
Horny,' and "We want more Sax." After this
week, the band will practice from 8 to 9 a jn.
Monday through Friday.
During the week 62 band members learned that
their student lottery football ticket orders had
been cancelled because their names were on the
1976 band roster. A band member recieves a foot
ball ticket besides a pass to get in games as a band
member.
Band has potential
This band has the most potential of any band
Tve been associated with," the former Syracuse m
University director of bands said. "Right now
we're ahead of where we were last year in terms
of marching and playing, but we're by no means
good yet."
Fought said 284 students auditioned last spring
and 238 came to band camp. A final cut brought
the number to 214.
The flag corps has been increased this year
from 16 to 24 girls, he said, and is directed by
former solo twirler Diane Tangeman.
The band will be led by senior drum majors
Don Thurshy, Diane Frost and Ken Tiekotter,
and will feature sophomore solo twirler Charla
JeanWillson.
