Chamber Orchestra's residency culminates with Kimball concerts Two different concerts will be given by the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra at Kimball Recital Hall 8 pjn. Friday and Saturday. Tickets cost S2 for UNL students, S3 for others. Friday's program includes J. S. Bach's "Sinfonia in G Minor, Copland's "Appalachian Spring, Crawford's "Aainte for Strings and Mozart's "Cassation in C" Saturday's program features HaydVs "Symphony in G Major, Scherchen s "S. Guest trumpeters for the Vivaldi piece jyill be Dennis Scheider, UNL professor of brass instruments, and Steve Erickson, UNL graduate assistant in trumpet from Holdrege. . Robert O 'Boyle, UNL assistant professor of woodwind instruments and theory, will accompany the orchestra on oboe in the "Brandenburg Concerto. ; Mini-concerts and workshops The St. Paul Chamber Orchestra will conduct mini concerts and workshops in Lincoln during its three-day residency. Thursday, members of the group will give Chamber Arts consorts in the Abel Hall north lounge at 6:30 pjn., and in the Neihardt Resident Center lounge at 8 pjn. Friday at 3 pjn., Director Dennis Russell Davies will talk in the Westbrook Music BIdg. about 20th century music. Saturday at 10 ajn., the orchestra will have an open rehearsal in Kimball Recital Hall. The orchestra' was founded in 1959 as a part-time, freelance orchestra of local musicans, many' from the Minneapolis Symphony. Demand for the group grew since it offered residents of the Twin Cities music not often heard outside academic communities, and the orchestra's audience quadrupled. Full-time professional orchestra In 1968 it became and still is the only full-time professional chamber orchestra in the United States. Under the direction of Davies, who joined the group m 1972, the 24 musicians are drawn from national orchestra backgrounds. The group's season has grown to 40 weeks annually, 14 of them touring. During the 1974-75 season, the orchestra toured Eastern Europe under the sponsorship of the U.S. Department of State, and aooeared in the Netherlands and Germany under private sponsorship. In November 1975. the srouo beean the Bicentennial Cultural Exchange Program with the Soviet Union with a four and one-half week tour of nine Russian cities. WomnosArt' entries displayed The grand prize winner and three honorable mention entries in the "Women as Art" competition will be displayed in the Union main lounge through Thursday. The competition, sponsored by the Black Masque Chapter of Mortar Board honor society at UNL and Lincoln Mortar Board Alumni, was judged by Harrison Taylor, curator of exhibitions at Omaha's Joslyn Art Gallery. Robin Smith, a graduate assistant in the UNL Art Dept.. won the $300 grand prize with his oil painting, "The Whh. It will be donated to Love Library. Receiving honorable mention and $25 were: Elizabeth Bunsen, a seniojr art major from Omaha, and Marlene Steuter, a senior art major from Westpoint. for their series of eight photographs entitled "Les Places Feminines; Kathleen Ricks, a graduate assistant in the Art Dept. from England, for her untitled porcelain work; and Martin Rotach, a Fine Arts graduate student from Salina, Kan., for his litho-sitkscreen.
