About The daily Nebraskan. ([Lincoln, Neb.) 1901-current | View Entire Issue (Feb. 27, 1976)
friday, fcbruary 27, 1976 daily nebraskan page 5 letters to I think a mandatory death penalty would go a long way toward achieving justice and law in America. I think your Third Dimension supplement was very organized and informative. Our legislators need to have all of our views (yes, stu dents, too!) to pass good and just criminal laws. Students should support mandatory death penalty because we have a lot of years to live. We should be able to live out our lives without fear of having criminals not punished and justice denied. Let's join our voices in a fight for fairness! Cliff Cloeman Students too biased? Regarding student's evaluations of instructors, I must admit that I would not trust the attitudes of students like myself in honestly evaluating a teacher. - Students are much too biased and whimsical to give a mature and resporcubk appraisal of an individual whose job may hang in the balance because of an unfavorable education. Christy Powell Regents were right Well, apparently the Regents were correct about my peers (students). The children are disguised as university students. The Love Library mess-up is evidence that there certainly seem to be quite a number of ruffians on this campus who do not know the first thing about responsibility. We will never get alcohol and don't deserve it if we cant handle the responsibilities inherent in the upkeep of a new building. The UNL students have choked in the clutch once again. If it isn't fires in the middle of uni versity streets then it is a garbage free-for-all in the library. Yes, Virginia, the students are children. Disgusted More on Title IX It is incredible to me that people like Victor Kelly still exist. His views on women's equality are totally narrow minded and outdated. As a matter of fact, the reason Title DC was legislated in the first place was because of male oppressors such as he. I hope the more responsible segment of the male popu lation will persist in its efforts to establish total equality of the sexes. By allowing men and women an equal and fair shake in all facets of life, our country will be making the most of its resources. Mary Jenkins First Vies president, AS UN and Member of Mortar Board KFMQ-FM vs. the "top 40V' I agree with Douglas Weil's article stating that KFMQ FM is deteriorating. However, it is not so much KFMQ's fault. The other stations in Lincoln are better than KFMQ! 'Top 40" stations play better music than KFMQ. Any "serious listener knows that the popular 'Top 40" songs are the best. More and more commercials are dominating the FM stations which means that the Top 40" stations are more popular because they play more music that more people want to listen to. Most people win take Elton John, Bay City Rollers, Glen Campbell, etc. over Joni Mitchell and St e vie Wonder any day. KFMQ-FM may be going downhill, but it is only because the other stations are so much better. - "Bo" Thomas The why's of the "Y" I am intrigued by the Student Y" and who sets its policies. What are they sponsoring a film of eroticism for? I thought the YWCA was a religious organization. But apparently there are people in the organization who think criminals (York) and eroticism are highly virtuous. I think we students of a more wholesome outlook should demand that Student Y change its priorities or lose student fee support. Student Y used to be a good idea. Now it's too idealistic. Judy Taylor innocent I Candidates slowly sinking bu&mdsnand still no land is in sight By Arthur Hoppe -. Still no sight of land. It 11 be another five long; months before we make New York-those of us who survive. We're beginning to drop now. One by one. Terry was the first to go. Terry Sanford, I think his name was. He hadn't been in this lifeboat long enough ' for us to get to know him very wclL One day he looked fine. The next, he just kind of gave up. "What's the use?" he said. "IH never make it. And I can't hear myself think over all the shouting." . So he slipped quietly over the side. Nobody lifted a hand to stop him. With him gone, there's more to go around for the rest of us. Bentsen never understood Tex Bentsen was next. Hardly made a ripple. Nice guy. But I don't think he ever understood why we must keep shouting and pumping our right arms up and down 16 hours a day. It seems simple enough. We shout to attract attention to ourselves and we pump our right arms up and down to show we're still alive. That's why we keep moving, too. AO the time, moving. I guess that's what makes the weather so queer. One day it's snowing, another it's hotter than blazes. But what gets you is wondering when your number's coming up. From what old Doc Gallup says, it might be Gov. MUtie, One-eyed Mo or Oklahoma Fred next. The Doc cant even find their pulse i. . Birch keeps eying them hungrily. I think if they get weak enough, he plans to pick them clean before they go over the side. Funny, guy, the Doc. He doesn't do anything for us. ' He just tells us how we are. And no matter how much we shout and pump our arms and move around, most of us are either barely holding our own or are getting weaker. Chicken-fried George Strange thing. One of the strongest aboard is Chicken fried George. And he does hardly any shouting, pumping or moving around. But we hate him. We all hate him. And there's no way he's going to make it. Well kill him first. You know what he says? He says if we try to kill him, hell stave in the boat and sink us all. That's the kind of vengeful little rat he is. But maybe he isn't strong enough. AD we can do is hope not. - So I don't know how long any of us can hold out. We're all on short rations now. We sneak around the boat, searching for any crumb, any morsel that may have been overlooked. And we're careful never to turn our backs on each other. You'd think we'd share. We're all in the same boat. But, no, each of us wants to be captain. So we shout and pump and scrounge and watch each other like hawks. And grow weaker. Sometimes, I don't see how any of us can make it. Except maybe Hubert. He's an odd one. He just sits there, smiling contentedly, not shouting or pumping or even trying to survive. And Doc says he's the strongest in the boat! .Sounds crazy, but Hubert's been through three ship wrecks. You think he knows something we don't know? (Copyright Chronic!
