Legislature hears support
for College of Fine Arts
By Dick Pier sol
Steven Sample, NU vice-president for
academic affairstestiiled Tuesday before
the Nebraska Legislature's Education Com
mittee in favor of a bill allowing the NU
Board of Regents to establish a College of
Fine Arts; ,
Sample said he did not know if the
regents intended to establish the college,
but they need the Legislature's authoriza
tion to do so if they think it is necessary.
Most major colleges and universities
have such colleges, he said, and it is not
clear why the authorization was omitted
from statutes allowing the regents to
establish other colleges within the uni
versity. Sample said growing interest and en
rollment in the UNL School of Music and
the University of Nebraska at Omaha
(UNO) School of Fine Arts, both designated
as Areas of Excellence, may show a need
for a College of Fine Arts at either campus.
He repeated that the bill, LB995, only
would allow the regents to establish the
college if they thought it was necessary at
.UNO or UNL.
Other colleges the Legislature has
authorized, but the regents have never
established, include Veterinary Medicine
and 'Surgery, Rural Health, Public Affairs
and Community Service and University
College.
Students in the School of Music cur
rently earn degrees in the Arts and Sci
ences, Teachers or Graduate Colleges. The
College of Arts and Sciences also grants de
grees in Speech and Theatre Arts, and
bachelor of fine arts degrees for art majors.
There was no opposition to the bill dur
ing the hearing.
