Jazz musicians
will be featured
Twenty-two jazz musicians from eastern Nebraska will
be featured in concert tonight at 8 p.m. in Kimball Re
cital Hall. The J2 admission charge goes to a scholarship
fund sponsored by Phi Mu Alpha-Sinfonia, a professional
music fraternity.
Two songs by the UNL Jazz Lab Band will open the
18th annual Portraits in Jazz concert, said Dennis
Schneider,- band director. After the guest musicians per
form their eight sets, Schneider said, they arid the 19
piece Jazz Lab Band will join in the finale, Duke Elling
ton's "C Jam Blues."
Schneider said the 22 featured performers range in age
from 19 to more than 70.
Thursday concert free
The UNL School of Music Symphonic Band, directed
by Jack Snider, will give a free 8 p.m. concert Thursday in,
Kimball Recital Hall.
Student trombone soloist Lori Linda u, a junior music
major from Lincoln, will perform Rismsky-Korsakov's
Concerto for Trombone and Bond ' .
Another highlight of the concert will be 13 selections
from Carmina Burana, an oratorio written by Carl Orff
and arranged for band by John Krance.

Plants, planters to be displayed
Page Spence, Sheldon Gallery Art Shop manager, has
announced the shop's next display: plants and planters.
The exhibit will open Tuesday and run until March 19.
The plants will be supplied by Azalealand and Green
Fingers, local house plant merchants and will be displayed
in an assortment of ceramic, stoneware and porcelain
planters made by area artists.
The featured potters include those made by three UNL
School of Art graduate students: Kathleen Ricks from
Tampa, Fla., Michael Hershey from Millersville, Penn., and
Bill Rowe.of Lincoln. Betty Wallace, a former art in
structor at Nebraska Wesleyan University, and Lincoln
artist Nancy Peterson also will have pottery on display in
addition to several works by artists from outside -Nebraska.

Spence said the display will feature works by persons
who have had exhibits in the art shop before and were in
vited back for a second showing. Size of the planters
varies from four to twelve inches in diameter. and the
shapes include those suitable for hanging, on tables or
floors, she said. All items are for sale, she added. .
World premier
will be highlight
of free concert
The world premiere .of a "UNL faculty member's
composition will highlight the Nebraska Woodwind
Quintet's free concert at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Kimball
Recital Hall.
Randall Snyder, assistant professor of Theory and
Composition in the School of Music, completed Alma
gest last December. Snyder will conduct Tuesday's per
formance of the piece for flute, oboe, clarinet, alto
saxophone, bassoon and horn.
Tne Woodwind Quintet, composed of UNL School
of Music faculty members, is David Van de Bogart,
flute; Robert O'Boyle, oboe; Wesley Reist, clarinet;
David Kappy, french horn and Gary Echols, bassoon.
