Election booths are. in the Nebraska
Union Ballroom and the East Campus
Union, said Ned Hedges, UNL assistant
vice-chancellor "for academic affairs, who
was authorized by the regents to release .
unbiased information on faculty bargaining.
Ballot boxes also will be located in the
Colleges of Dentistry and Law, which will
be voting for no bargaining unit or separate
faculty bargaining units made up of faculty
members in each college and not the AAUP,
.Hedges said.
About 330 mail ballots were sent to
UNL extension and research division per
sonnel across the state, Hedges said, but
are placed in ballot boxes by court officials,
meaning the number of out-state ballots
which are returned will not be distinguished
from others when the vote is being
tabulated. -
" . Regents' appeal
A group called Concerned Faculty, ur
ging UNL , faculty to vote against the
AAUP, was formed after the court set the
election date.
Headed by Everett Peterson, UNL agri
culture economics professor, the group re
leased a letter stating what it called the bad
points of collective bargaining and pub
lished several advertisements in the Daily
Nebraskan.
It is possible the AAUP representation
issue will not be settled after today's elec
tion, according to Hedges, because the
regents filed an appeal in January with the
court opposing the election.
"They (the Regents) are appealing the
determination of the unit," he said. "They
believe it 'should include the entire Uni
versity (including the University of Nebras
ka at Omaha and the University of Nebras
ka Medical Center)."
This appeal still is pending in the court,
he said, and if the decision is made in favor
of the regents, today's election would be
invalid. :
