page 8 monday, february 9, 1976 daily nebraskan bill Footba 1 1 te I ecdst's oard hearing scheduled Wednesday, the Nebraska Legislature's Labor Committee will hear public testimony on LB828, which would allow closed-circuit telecasts in the new sports complex of home football games by the Nebraska Educational " Television ' Commission. The bill would appoint the lieutenant governor, the UNL athletic director and the , Nebraska Educational Television Commission chairman as an advisory committee to decide which games would be telecast. Milligan Sen. Richard Maresh, sponsor of the bill, said LB828 may be amended to include away football games. He said there may be some conflcits with NCAA rules which could eliminate telecasting home games. UNL Athletic Director Bob Devaney said the idea had been tried in the mid 1960s, without financial success. Four games, two at home and two away, were telecast, according to Devaney, with net profits of $2,5000, $2,000 and $500 . on the first three and an $1,800 loss to the Athletic Dept. on the fourth, Devaney said. He said it would cost $10,000 to $15,000 to telecast the games. If the tele casts were provided, Devaney said, it would be as a public service. "We can't afford to take a loss," he said. Devaney said the NCAA "appreciable damage rule," which protects small colleges and high schools from attendance losses because of telecasts ofmajor games, may interfere with the idea. , ' He said gate receipts would have to be split between the Athletic Dept. and the visiting school. "We're not going to fight it," he said, "but I don't think we "an make money."
