By Anita Stork Fees Allocation Board (FAB) has recommended the policy of giving free meals to Union Advisory Board members before each meeting be discontinued. Sherry Cole, subcommittee chairman investigating the practice, said FAB will talk to Ken Bader, vice-chancellor for student affairs, asking him to end the policy. Cole said money used to pay the meals comes from stu dent fees. 'The meals are paid for by one of (Union Director) Al Bennett's administrative accounts," Cole said. "The accounts are financed by Fund B of student fees." FAB Board chairman Don Weseley said the free meals were, "compensation for the work done by Union Board members." "I don't think its at all appropriate," Wesely said. "FAB and Union Program Council members aren't com pensated and they perform a service for the students too." The meals do not amount to a large amount of money, Weseley added, but it's a question " of principle and pos sible conflict of interest." Bennett said the free meals is not "a question of being legal or not" but simply "an administrative decision." "The cost to the Union is only the food," Bennett said. "The labor costs already are there." This has been a Union policy since 1938, according to Female vacancies available this semester. Cornhusker Co Op, 705 No. 23rd. Call 475 6796. 'The board decided to meet at 5:30 p.m. because of conflicts with members' class and work schedules," Ben nett said. "If they didn't eat at the Union they wouldn't have time to eat." The meal cost probably is not more than $100 a semester, he said. "Providing the meals is a necessary courtesy as a matter of convenience and goodwill," he said. Bennett said the board met during the dinner hour "perhaps two out of a dozen semesters" depending on members' schedules. It might be looked upon as compen sation, he said, but "that is not our intention." Other semesters when the board meets later in the evening, the question of free meals does not arise, he said. Cole said it "doesn't matter if it is intended or not, it is, in fact, compensation." Bader said he would not take a position on the matter until he receives the recommendation. "I would prefer to have the matter resolved between the Union Board, Mr. Bennett and FAB," Bader said. According to Weseley, FAB policy does not allow stu dent fee money to be used for food, parties or transporta tion for individuals. 'That sort of thing is not a proper use of student fees," Weseley said. Ragtime Piano is Coming! I Benefit concert Sunday Feb. 15, 3 p.m. Tickets $2.50.
