thursday, february 5, 1976 daily nebraskan page 10 er crew coach has come in Vtrokin Rusthoven, who first met Spousta at the Head-of-the-Charles Regatta last fall in Boston, said Nebraska had been looking for a new coach since early last fall. "I felt I had taken the team as far as I was capable of taking them," Rusthoven said. "I wanted to find someone with more experience." He said the biggest problem he's faced thus far is what he called a lack of funds, both for his salary and the crew team itself. "The job's shaky as far as pay goes. There's nothing concrete yet about my salary," Spousta said. "It (Spousta 's salary) depends a lot on how our fund-raising goes." Spousta added that he'd like to get a job in UNL's physical education dept. Spousta spends about six hours daily working on row ing techniques in a "crew tank" in the pool at Abel Hall. "I like to emphasize the type of training that will be Gymnast competing against herself similar to the type of event. In crew, this means emphasis on cardiovascular development," he said. "The aspect I emphasize is running, but you have to learn to row first." Because of Nebraska's severe winters and early springs, UNL's crew probably will train in Texas during spring break, Spousta said. A meet with Oklahoma State University is set for late March on the crew's return trip from Texas. Alabama and Washburn Universities also are possible participants. The crew coaches are not looking that far ahead, however, and now are concentrating on teaching the fundamental techniques of rowing to new team members, using Spousta's coaching philosophy. "I want to help each person come close to realizing their full potential in a boat," Spousta said. "I want to help each do their best, irregardless of his size or previous experience." Mew Hus By Pete Wegman It didn't take UNL's newest coach long to get to work. Bob Spousta, new head crew coach, arrived in Lincoln from Amherst, Mass., on Friday, Jan. 16. He met with the crew team the following Sunday, and Monday morning he was at practice. Spousta replaces former head coach Ron Rusthoven, who is taking over the freshman coaching duties. The new 26-year-old coach will receive a master's degree in exercise science from University of , Massachusetts this month. Spousta, women's coach at Massachusetts University the past three years, also was a member of the Union Boat Club in Boston and the Potomac Club while in the army. "I want to get into coaching as a career. This was the best opportunity available," he said. "Nebraska has a fine crew program; they've done well the last few years." By Susie Reitz "When I compete it's against the beam or the bars against myself," said UNL all-around gymnast Barb Baker. "In high school, the people watching and judging were always people I knew," said Baker, a freshman criminal justice major from Omaha. "Now the pressure on me is not from what other people expect, and I'm not just com peting for them." Now, she said, she has more control and one mistake won't ruin her concentration for the rest, of a meet. Baker will be competing against Oklahoma State University in UNL's second home meet Saturday at 10 ajn. in the Women's Physical Education Bldg. 119. Baker placed third , at state and won districts in all around competition her senior year in high school. That year she also took second in uneven parallel bars. Her junior year at state she placed second in vaulting. "Vaulting and bars are my favorite events. They're what I've always done best in," she said. Baker started young in gymnastics, working with her older brother in a YMCA gym across the street from their Cleveland, Ohio home. When Baker was in seventh grade, she said, the family moved to Omaha where she started junior high gymnastics competition. In Omaha, she also participated in private gymnastics clubs. Baker attended the week-long Midwest Gymnastics Camp in Boone, Iowa, for three summers, she said. Despite a back injury suffered while cheerleading her sophomore year, Baker continued in gymnastics, she said, and became an all-arounder her junior year when the team's leading all-around gymnast had knee surgery. A scholarship to UNL not only helped her decide where to attend college, but also kept her in gymnastics, she said. "I wasn't going to stay with it, but when I got the scholarship I decided to come here and try it," she said. UNL's team members are close, and unlike high school every team member is willing to work hard, Baker said. She said coach Karen Black "works with all the girls and doesn't have any favorites." "On some teams there are a couple of superstars, but it's not that way here. We're all really close," Baker said. ; sports 1 shoes' Women interested in trying out for the softball team should be working out in the Men's Physical Education Bldg. at 3:30 pjn.
