Arts committee attracts 'class acts'
Ron Bowlin strongly believes in the National Endow
ment for the Arts tenet, "The arts are a right, not a
privilege.
That's why he said he has time and energy to help the
Cultural Affairs Committee become an important part of
UNL.
Bowlin said he and several friends organized the group
four years ago to bring new and special talent to the
campus.
A year later, the group, University Friends of the Arts,
became a committee comprised of UNL students, faculty
members and staff members from the fine arts depts.
The committee's greatest service, Bowlin said, is to
provide UNL with professional performing arts programs.
Bowlin, who is committee coordinator, said over
$80,000 has been spent this year to bring to Kimball
Recital Hall such talent as the Alvin Ailey Dance Com
pany, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the St. Louis
xr m
Symphony and the City Center Acting Company of New
York.
The committee receives about $50,000 in ticket sales,"
Bowlin said, and the remainder must come from founda
tions for the advancement of the arts.
Most of the committee's money is from the Fees Allo
cation Board, Bowlin said. The group currently is the
only UNL organization receiving its allotment during the
spring, allowing it to plan for the next year wijth time to
compensate for cancellations, he said.
Some money is donated by organizations such as the
National Endowment for the Arts, the Nebraska Arts
Council and the Mid-America Arts Alliance which, Bowlin
said, provides the most financial help.
He said the Alliance supplies programs each year to
schools in the four-state alliance (Oklahoma, Nebraska,
Missouri and Kansas) that individual schools could not
afford.
