Proposed bill will alter divorce law
A proposal to revamp Nebraska's existing no-fault di
vorce law, passed in 1972, attempts to make women
legally equal to men in marriage, according to Ellen Sim
Dewey, legislative chairperson for Omaha's chapter of the
National Organization for Women (NOW).
Dewey, who spoke at the University Women's Action
Group meeting Tuesday, said LB913, introduced by the
Nebraska Legislature's Judiciary Committee last week,
represents four years of work by 400 people.
Last year 3,000 women were "ripped off by the
existing no-fault divorce law, and the "rash of middle-age"

men wanting divorces, she said.
The current law leaves women, after divorce, econom
ically "oppressed and depressed," she said, as it leaves the
woman without health and life insurance, income capa
bilities, and seldom with alimony payments.
LB913 provides for couples to write their own private
marriage contracts, and calls for equal division of eco
nomic assets if the couple breaks up.
The bill provides monetary benefits for older women
who have been homemakers, with no job training and who
are suddenly faced with an un desired divorce. -
