thursday, january 22, 1976 page 15 daily nebraskan New By Virginia Broady City and state governments, as well as private industry, need persons with background in urban studies, according to Jack Siegman, a UNL sociology associate professor and the chief adviser of UNL urban studies. This "need" along with student interest prompted crea tion of the new urban studies major last semester, Siegman said. Urban studies is an area with a broad basis which ap plies to many fields, he said. It is an interdepartmental program involving 13 departments. According to Siegman, too many persons being gradu ated from college are over-specialized in fields related to urban studies, and there is an increasing need for people who understand the different aspects of urban life and development. Urban studies includes areas such as architecture, urban planning, municipal government, urban politics, ecology and finance. He said areas in which an urban studies major would be especially useful are architecture, eco nomics, political science, geology and geography. Major "flexible" "The major is flexible enough so that the student can tailor it to fit his interests," Siegman said. The Arts and Science College's Advisory Board Senat in November voted unanimously to establish the major, won Z3 Dual 1218 turntable, 2 yr. old, $100. Pr. ADC loud speekers. 2 yrt. old. $120 pr. According to John Schnieder, UNL assistant history professor and a member of the committee which investi gated the need for an urban studies major, the major was easily established. It is comprised of courses already being taught at UNL, he said. It was implemented quickly and there were no new expenses. He added that he did not think a department of urban studies would be established. Hybrid "Urban studies is a hybrid of classes from different de partments," he said, adding that the classes operate better through the different departments, According to Siegman, the urban studies major is a Minority careers workshop planned A workshop to emphasize the positive aspects of a business career for minority students will be presented in the Nebraska Union Jan. 28 at 7 pjn., according to Barron Harvey, chairman of the ethnic minority commit tee in the College of Business Administration (CBA). However, Siegman said, several students have shown an interest and he expects many students to major in urban studies next year. He added that urban studies is not new at UNL.
