A resolution recommending that all intercollegiate athletic governing groups consider restricting athletic scholarships to tuition and fees was passed unanimously at last week's Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) convention. Delegates at the Scottsdale, Ariz., convention de cided to maintain the current divisions large college (more than 3,000 women) and small college 0e5S than 3000). Cross country was separated from track and field and given an eight-scholarship limit. Delegates also voted to allow only members of AIAW to compete in regional tournaments. The new women's intramural volleyball champion is Pound 8, which defeated French Quarters in three sets Dec. 11. nebraskan Harris free throws stymie OU By Jim Hunt Two free throws by Rickey Harris with 12 seconds left in the game lifted UNL's basketball team to a 68-67 Big 8 Conference win over Oklahoma University (OU) Wednesday night. "I knew we needed the free throws to win the game," Harris, a Denver native, said. "I just relaxed and put them in. Yet the Huskers were fortunate to come away with their eleventh win of the season, said head coach Joe Cipriano. "We weren't ready for the second half," Cipriano said. "We were very fortunate to win the game. "We had a poor effort defensively by a lot of people tonight. We were out played, out rebounded and out hustled. Thanks to the home court crowd we were able to hang on," he said. The Huskers hit almost 77 per cent of their shots the first half to take a 40-30 lead into the lockerroom at the half. The team hit 20 or 26 first half shots at guard Jerry Fort contributed 18 points and forward Bob Siegel 12 points to give the Huskers a first half lead that at one time was as large as 14 points. It was OU's ability to hit free throws that kept them in the game at half time. The Sooners were perfect in 12 free throw attempts the first half while connecting on nine of 17 shots from the field. The Sooners tame out the second half and cut away at the Husker lead, tying the game at 59-59 with 5:43 left From that point, it was a seesaw battle with no team leading by more than two points. The Sooners got two shots off in the final 12 seconds, but both failed to go in as the Huskers pushed their Big 8 record to 2-0. Harris's two free throws capped an eight point night for the 6 ft. 7 in. forward. He hit three of four shorts from the field and two of three from the line while pull ing down six rebounds and four assists. Wrestlers to face 3rd-ranked OSU UNL wrestling coach Orval Borgialli may feel like he's sacrificing his Husker wrestlers to the lions Saturday when the Huskers face Oklahoma State University's (OSU) Cowboys in the Coliseum at 7:30 pjn. It's not that Borgialli has a bad team, but that the level of competition is so good. , Third-ranked OSU, third in the NCAA behind Iowa and Oklahoma Universities last year, has won the national title 27 times since 1928. But The Cowboys have won the Big 8 Conference title only 14 times. Following the Huskers 24-18 dual win over Missouri last Saturday in the Coliseum, Borgialli was asked if he planned anything special in preparation for the Cowboys. "Yeah, I'm going to pray, and I'm going to church tomorrow," he said. Compounding Borgialli s problems is a Huskers-South Dakota dual meet Friday at 1:30 pjn. in Vermillion. Originally Borgialli had scheduled the Huskers against OSU Friday, when he said the team would be rested, and South Dakota, Saturday. However, OSU could not schedule a Saturday dual match against Iowa State, whom it will wrestle the previous night in Ames.. Borgialli said South Dakota's team is similar to Nebraska's, with strength in the upper weights. "Well need some help out of our lighter kids this week," Borgialli said. "A win over South Dakota is a must for us psychologically fu Saturday's match." Saturday's match pits Husker Tony Jennings, z senior business administration and physical education major from Corning, Iowa, against the Cowboys Steve Barrett. Both are undefeated in duals this year. "Oklahoma State has to be favored," Borgialli said. "If they (UNL's wrestlers) give me 100 per cent, that's all I can ask." Swimmers floating on depth of talent By Susie Rcitz Depth of personnel talent is the major strength of the UNL women's swimming team and diving team, head coach Pat Sullivan said, and the difference from previous years should show on team's point totals. "No one on the team is weak," Sullivan said. "Every one this year has the potential to be a contributor pointwise." In past years, the team has had "a few strong swimmers and others who were real questions," she said. This year, the team has four additional members, she said, increas ing squad membership to 17. Freshmen have made "significant contributions" to the team, Sullivan said. Two freshmen swimmers, Ellen Hollander, an Omaha social work major, and Use Magee, a physical education ' major from- Scabrook, Tex., are on scholarship. Each swam on three first place teams in the December Big 8 Conference Rekys at Kansas University (KU) in which fJNL finished second. Although both are strong all-around swimmers, Hol lander is strongest in breasts troke and Magee in the back stroke, Sullivan said. Senior Ruth Spencer, a recreation major, sophomore UZli Crosby, a physical education major arid junior Deb Peterson, a pre-medical student, are leaders among the veteran swimmers, Sullivan said. The three Omahans all are on scholarship. Crosby and Spencer also swam on three winning relay teams in the Big 8 meet. Sullivan said Omaha freshman Kristi Wells and Lincoln freshman Lois Hay man, both undeclared majors, have done well on the diving squad. Since only one diving scholarship is awarded, neither is on scholarship. Senior Nancy Dykes of Omaha has the scholarship. All three have sufficient degrees of difficulty in their dives to qualify for the national meet in Miami, Sullivan said. Junior Kathy Falck of Friend, a physical education major, has shown "1,000 per cent improvement since she began diving three years ago, Sullivan said. Falck is the squad's fourth member. The swimmers first test of the semester is Saturday at the Northern Iowa University's double dual meet A double dual differs from a triangular in that each team is compared to the other two and wins are awarded on a dual basis, Sullivan said. In Big 8 competitii, UNL's strongest competitors will be KU and Iowa State University (ISU), Sullivan said. ISU did not compete in the Big 8 Relays. The Huskers will face ISU, the University of Missouri and Stephen's College of Columbia, Mo. in their first home meet, Jan. 3 1. Fort continued his hot shooting, collecting 23 points. The 6 ft. 3 in. two-time All Big 8 selection hit 10 of 15 shots from the field and three of four free throws. Siegel, a 6 ft. 6 in. junior from Fairbury, also had a fine shooting niAt hitting seven for seven from the field and two for three from the line for 16 points. OU was led by sophomore forward Billy Graham's 20 points. The Sooners had four other players in double figures including Rick McNeil with 17 points, and Kevin Jones, Eddie Fields and John McCuLtough with 10 points each. The Huskers, who pushed their season record to 1 1-4, will play their next game this Saturday against Colorado at Boulder. The Sooners now 3-11 will host Kansas State this Saturday at Norman. In other Big 8 basketball news, Ken Trickey, head coach of the Iowa State Cyclones resigned Wednesday. The Cyclones have a 1-14 record after a 68-60 loss to Kansas University Tuesday night. Cyclones threaten UNL track streak A 27 home dual-meet winning streak will be on the line when the Husker track team meets Iowa State University (ISU) Saturday in the last dual planned for the old indoor track under Memorial Stadium. Field events start at 1:15 pjn., running events at 2 pan. The only other Husker indoor home meet is a quad rangular scheduled for Feb. 21. Next year the Huskers will compete in the new sports complex on the State Fairgrounds. Coach Frank Sevigne, whose team will try to rebound from last-place conference finishes both indoors and out doors last spring, was hesitant to say what the team's strong points might be. Among the leaders should be Chuck Malito, senior from Lakewood, Colo., and Scott Sorchik, junior from Sussex, N J., he said. Bom were Big 8 Conference cham pions two years ago: Malito in the 440-yard run and Sorchik in the javelin. However, both will have to wait until the outdoor sea son to practice their specialities. Malito began concentrat ing on the 440-yard intermediate hurdles last season, whuich along with the javelin is done outdoors. The Huskers also will be bolstered by three freshmen from Jamaica, long a hotbed of UNL trackmen. Raymond Mahoney and Pat McKenzie will participate in 220-yard run and 440-yard run. Neville Murray will join sophomore David Green, another Jamaican, in the triple jump. Sevigne said about 15 former Husker trackmen now live in Jamaica, which he said helps him in recruiting. Ten other states and Canada also are represented on the 42-man squad. The high jump will be one event to watch. Sophomore Dean Herzog from Lansing, Kan., and freshman Doug Phelps of Hastings both cleared 7 ft. in high school and threaten the Husker record of 6 ft. 10.5 in. sports quiz Corahusker Football 1.
