Janet Poley, formerly of UNL Ag Communications and a UNL professor, now works in Washington, D.C.
One of Poley's duties is in the foreign development
division, she said, where she helps foreign participants get
college degrees in agriculture or related areas.
"I'm trying to help foreign students in programs de
signed to best meet the needs of the individual and his
country," Poley said. "We monitor their schooling and
programming while the students are training."
The USDA training programs are designed for students
and other participants and are financed by the Agency for
International Development (AID) or the Food and Agri
culture Organization (FAO). Most participants are in
graduate work and are from underdeveloped countries,
Poley said.
Poley's duties at UNL included production and talent
work for the Nebraska Educational Television Network
(NETV) for home economics programs and development
of instructional programming. She was producer and
hostess for a NETV weekly program entitled "One for the
Money-A Consumer Show."
She also produced a series of videotapes for use in
training nutrition educators through a Swanson Center for
Nutrition grant. Poley, who is the first graduate fellow for
the Swanson Center, said that the programs will be avail
able for use nationally through the Great Plains Library.
Poley, who worked at UNL for nine years, summarized
her reasons for deciding to move.
"I felt that the job with USDA offered potential for
personal growth, especially in the international area, as
well as provided a challenge," she said. "Although there
was a large salary increase involved, I was not unhappy at
UNL and did not base my decision on the salary
difference."
. Ralston Graham, chairman of Agriculture Communica
tions and head of the committee to replace Poley, said
that Poley performed her job "exceptionally well. Pre
recorded tapes of the consumer program Poley worked
on are being aired on NETV, and editorial assistant Shelly
Kalkowski is continuing the radio programs and the home
economics press."
