By Anita Stork Plans for a multi-purpose University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) downtown education center are being de veloped following a state-sponsored survey, according to Sam Jensen, chairman of an Omaha higher education task force. Jensen, an Omaha attorney, said results of a survey of 990 Omahans indicated the majority favored ponstruction of such a center. ' ;"' The task force, which is the planning committee for the proposed center, will contact the Nebraska Legisla ture, Jensen said, and "indicate a willingness to plan a cen ter to be used by UNO, Metro Technical Community College and state offices." "Originally the task force intended the center for use by UNO and Metro Tech only," Jensen said. "We then re ceived a letter from Gov. J. James Exon citing use of the center for state offices also." The survey, conducted by Selection Research Incor porated (SRI) at a cost of $6,000, indicated that nearly seven of 10 Omahans questioned favored construction of the center. Jon Oberg, state budget analyst, said four options for use of the center were offered in the survey: UNO use alone: 23 per cent. -Combination of UNO and Metro Tech use: 35 per Houseparent couple desiring involvement and valuable experience at reasonable pay. The majority of UNO students surveyed favored the Metro Tech-UNO combination. The NU Board of Regents passed a resolution at its Jan. 10 meeting endorsing UNO and state office usage, according to Regent Edward Schwartzkopf of Lincoln. Comprised of education administrators from UNO,. Creighton University, Dana College in Blair and Bellevue College, the task force will function as a resource and planning group when dealing with the Legislature, Jensen said. The Legislature and its Appropriations Committees also are interested in state offices for the center, accord ing to Jensen. He said state office use might be limited because of what he called the parking problem. "A job center would not be practical because of the limited parking downtown," Jensen said. "An education office would be more appropriate." An anonymous donor will contribute $2.5 million if downtown business interests will match funds and the Legislature will grant $5 million. Sources indicate the donor is Omaha construction firm owner Peter Kiewit, who also holds controlling interest in the World Publish ing Co., publisher of the Omaha World-Herald.
