, UNL student Ronnie "Ship" Smith was
bound over Wednesday to Lancaster Dis
trict Court on charges of probation
violation.
Smith pleaded innocent at a Nov. 18 ar
raignment. At Wednesday's hearing a Jan. 9
trial date was set for Smith, with Judge
Dale Fahrnbruch presiding.
One of the stipulations of probation is
that the person on probation not be in
volved in any illegal acts. The county, rep
resented at the hearing by Deputy County
Attorney Stephen Yungblut, contended
that Smith violated this stipulation, thus
causing grounds for revocation of
probation.
According to Yungblut, Smith inter
fered with a Campus Police officer in com
mission of his duties in an Oct. 15 incident
involving an alleged scuffle in the
Nebraska Union between Campus Police
Officer Ron Lundy and UNL student
Regina Edington.
The only two witnesses at the prelim
inary hearing Wednesday were Lundy and
Detective Al Broadstone. Both were
prosecution witnesses.
Both men testified that on two oc
casions during the alleged scuffle between
Edington and Lundy, Smith approached
Lundy from behind and had physical con
tact with Lundy at least once. According
to Lundy, Smith "slowed down the hand
cuffing of the prisoner."
