,..jnyliu rfotfAmKr If) 1Q7R daily nebraskan nMn it Artists need promotional techniques An artist must learn to promote him or herself as a business person which demands a great deal of time and effort and creates frustration, agreed a panel of women artists at Tuesday's WomenSpeak 75. The five-member panel displayed some of their work and discussed art and the art market. Panel members were Shelly Becker, toymaker and free-lance illustrator; Barbara Kendrick, printmaker; Anne Burk holder, painter; Jackie Lipsky, owner of Lincoln's Home Gallery, and Elaine Williams, commercial designer. The art market is based on competition and is male-dominated, Kendrick said. Several panelists agreed that artists tra ditionally are competitive and must leam to be cooperative in order to survive. Burkholder and Kendrick said as women artists, they have encountered criticism from men. Males frown upon romanticism in art, Burkholder said, because they look for more abstract and intellectual expres sions in ait. Kendrick said she has been told her pirnts were "too strong for a woman." She added that at one time she attributed her work to her husband because female art is "supposed to be weaker than a man's art, and female ideas are not supposed to show." Kendrick also pointed but that most art schools have all-male faculties. "Female art students often have no model to identify with other than the male teacher,", she said. Lipsky, who operates a gallery in her home, said artists often find it difficult to work together as businessmen. She added that she does not think she's a threat to men because "I'm where they want me in the home."
