page 6 Class helping disabled eat "By Sandy Mohr " ' Feeding himself isn't easy for 12-year-old David Walter. David suffers from a disease that destroyed the muscles in his arms and legs. A UNL mechanical engineering class directed by Joseph Baumgarten has de signed a table-attached machine with a car rying arm and sppon to help David, a stu dent at Park School. Hie device was designed by the fall, 1974 class and tested and refined by the spring, 1975 class. About 31 students worked on it, according to project chair man Tim Wentz. Wentz, now a graduate student in busi ness, took the machine to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers annual meeting in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 15. After judging by a panel of mechanical en gineers, the UNL machine won a second place prize of $60. The prize money goes into a UNL mechanical engineering special fund which financed the machine's cost of about $90, Wentz said. That money came from prize ; money won by an artificial leg project the year before, he added. The machine also was a part of last April's Engineering Week display. There it - won first place for its department and second in the overall category. Despite the machine's success in com petition, David cannot use it. Because his daily nebraskan I '., .' So a UNL industrial engineering class now is working on installing a motor on the machine so David can operate it by a button. This class received a federal grant for the project. "The machine was originally designed for one child and one child only," Wentz said, but if motorized it could be used by arthritics, stroke patients and palsy vic tims. , After this adaptation is made, the machine may be marketed, he said. monday, uecember 8, i75 French teacher to be awarded 'palms' insignia An honor instituted by Napoleon will be presented to a UNL French professor Tuesday. Jane Dein, associate professor of French, will be awarded the insignia of the Order of Academic Palms by Jean Beaulieu, French cultural attache in Chicago for the French Embassy. At 1:30 in the Nebraska Union, Beaulieu will deliver a lecture on French efforts to preserve their cultural heritage, in addition to awarding the medal. The Order of the Academic Palms is a decoration to honor writers, artists and educators, Dein said. It is given to encour age American-French relations. A UNL professor hasn't been awarded the honor for 15 years. Dein, vice chairperson of the Modern Languages Dept., has coordinated two pro grams in which university students study in France: one with undergraduate students and one with graduate students. The grad uate student program Involves an exchange -a French graduate student comes to UNL to teach French and an American graduate student goes to a French university to , teach English. Dein is a past president of the American Association of Teachers of French.
